Mightymariner
One of my friends is going to drill some grass seed on what he describes as 'rum' ground, meaning he's expecting to leave a lot on the surface. My question is: will pigeons go for grass seed? Thanks in anticipation.
aga man
No, not likley i would say, certainly not attractive to pigeons accross this side. If there is pigeon traffic over the field you may well decoy them but in my experience the pigeons won't feed there. You might get a few corvids on it though. Konnie
Worth keeping a eye on it, if it is still to be drilled will be one of the latest fields to be worked and may be able to attract pigeons to it if passing traffic, also as it starts to grow may get what I call soft weeds chickweed grounsell? that pigeon like. I have shot several on fresh paddock drilling.

pintail
they have just now drilled a field with grass seed on my permission, was plenty of rooks on there today, no pigeons at all, but dont mind a day corvid shooting so will set up and give it a go. Mightymariner
Thanks for the info. It is certainly the last field to be drilled on his farm. I will wait and see what happens.
fenboy
Yes pigeon love some grass seed , a couple of years back one of the farms I shoot planted a new orchard it attracted 100s if not 1000s of pigeon when they seeded the strips between the trees. only the other day I drove past a golf course were they had done some repairs / alterations the pigeon were almost wedged into the small patches there were so many of them. aga man
Very suprised at that fenboy, on our dairy farm they re sow 3 year lay pasture and other grasses all the time, never once seen a pigeon on any of it! I suppose it all goes to show how different regions and available food etc can effect feeding.
fenboy
Strange if thats the case , I can only speak of what I have seen in my area .
rjimmer
Grass seed is usually scattered on the surface, followed by light harrowing and a lot of rolling. One for the mouse and one for the crow, one to rot and one to grow.
colin.y
funny enough had this conversation with a fellow shooter today. both of us have been shooting pigeons for 20+ year and he was saying when he was a nipper they had endless days of pigeon shooting on grass seeds. I cant think i have ever had a day decoying over grass seeds. nothing worth remembering any way. very dependent on variety of grass i guess. also what else is around to feed on.
