Just had a mangy vixen.

205yds. A simple stake out after a tip off from the keeper. He's been dumping the squirrel cull by a gate (so far 142) the vixen showed just before dark so no need for NV.

Had another last sat from another perm which was called with a wam from around 300yds. That bolted in and stopped it st about 100yds it full pelt.

Pics to follow.

Must get out more.

Nice 1 Babs. Pics are still your weak spot though ;-)

Had to be bloody quick, 5 more steps I'd have lost sight of him.

A lovely bit of land too.

2 other people shoot it but don't get much. :-)

So the farmer called in the professional lol

Nice shooting David. :good:

Back up to that new permission again tonight. Suspected there was more work to do there but wasn't exactly enthused at the thought of having to shoot a vixen with cubs. Needs must though so another night out was definitely needed. Parked up in the yard, got the rifle loaded, thermal on, walked 30 yards to the gate into the first field, had a quick scan and there's a fox not 50 yards away heading to my right. Quickly get the gun on the gate, gave it a squeak to hold it, and gave it the bad news. Again a bit apprehensive as I walked over to it, but relieved to find it a dog fox, good nick too. Walked up to the end of the permission without seeing anything else, so put the caller on the boundary, got comfy under a handy ash tree, and ran snowshoe on the foxpro. Barely 2 minutes goes by when I see a fox coming off the hill to the right. I let it get through the boundary and dropped it at a comfortable distance. Thought this had to be the vixen, but no, another dog fox.

For sure there's a vixen or two on that patch with cubs, but I'm going to leave them be unless I hear of another lamb being taken. I'm relatively confident one of the dogs, or the barren vixen, or even a combination of all three were responsible for the lambs going. The vixen/s have a stay of execution for now.

Took my 17 rem out for a bit of fresh air last night, I checked zero at 125yds on a 3inch hardox 1st, high and left by 1 moa. Made a correction, then smacked the bolt a couple of times. Sorted.

Waited for a few moments and then Mr Fox appears out at 230 yds.

As most of you guys know I am leaving the foxes alone at the moment unless I get a call.

Nice Sunday roast and a cold alcoholic beverage planned yesterday....family got in the way for the first part of the day...followed by the dreaded text...fox has taken some chickens, The farmer has 40-60,000 but doesnt like it when he finds them in bits all over the fields.

Got over for about 8.45 p.m and set up the rifle on top of my pickup with a view over the fields around the sheds. Farmer came to say hello just before dark and then headed off. Waited for about an hour before it got properly dark and had a shine to see a tell tail set of eyes top side of the shed...over to the NV to see the fox heading straight towards the sheds..gave a good hand squeak and stopped the fox just before it disappeared. Hit him in the bib at about 80 yards so a good start.

Waited another 10 minutes and decided to go for a quick walk, typically I walked down the field and spotted a fox on the bank above where I had been. The fox didnt want to stop so a loud squeak stopped it long enough to get a shot away. Circa 140 yard chest shot.

Given where the 2 foxes were I decided to leave them and go and pick them up this morning before work.

Farmer was chuffed so fingers crossed I dont get another call for a little while. Also 1 dog and a barren vixen so no cubs to worry about.

Pic isnt worthy of a lot so not putting it forward for the 2017 awards

Were the 2 together or taken separately ?

Having spotted a few Sunday morning with no shot, spotted a scrawny young buck with two does. Shot him at about 60m and then the more mature buck lifted its head from the grass close by didn't know he was there. Took him at about the same range.

It's not as complicated as it looks really. Lol

The rifle is a rebarreled SakoS491 and a high gloss blacking done on the action by "midcounties blacking" in Lichfield, The barrel is a Sassen, and is as smooth as glass.Virtually no fouling at all. But I am helping a bit using HBN coated bullets and a patch up the barrel. Scope Sightron 8-32×56 LRMOA,mounted on a rail to enable the forward mounting of the Archer. And a Dragonfly ir with a piece of Silicon hose on the end to stop rain from ruining the IR.

Loads are 25.5 grn Varget 20grn vmax rem brass.

For nosler custom brass 26.5 CFE223 20 vmax. (Case capacity is far less in the nosler, max Varget I can fit in is 24.4)

Another off my new bit.

Seen a load of fallow too. :-)

I'll work on that. Might start with a few venison sausages and burgers to temp the landowner.

Well done mate. Fingers crossed about the Fallow.

What is the deer distribution like around your ground? I presume a good few Reds and a few fallow here and there. Anything much on Roe or muntjac?
