johnnytheboy
So it's getting time to sell my short wheel base g-wagon which is a fun toy just for me and buy something family orientated, I was thinking either a long wheel base defender with roof top tent type thingy, or a 4x4 sprinter and giving it a camper conversion (diy I'm not made of money) Has anyone real experience with a 4x4 sprinter? Driving difficulties such as low bridges? Would it be additional cost on ferries etc? I'm looking for any issues that I might not be aware of from owning such a strange vehicle! four-wheel-drive
I was in the local supermarket car park the other day and there was a new Merk sprinter 4x4 belonging to SWEB I think it looked realy great.
team tractor
Road tax £400+ I think Speed limit is reduced to 60mph on dual carriage and 50 on single roads. Don't expect good mpg as most drivers I've spoken to only manage 380 miles to a tank at £80 and that's the 2wd .
al4x
Road tax £240 as commercial as far as I know, ferries should be ok once converted but obviously they are quite long and most seem to charge on length.
four-wheel-drive
I was looking at a 2007 jeep it had a 2.8 TD engine and the road tax is a stupid £500 per year I do not now how it works with vans though.
johnnytheboy
Road tax is not a concern as my g-wag is already the dearest category, mpg should hopefully be better than the 12mpg I currently get I would like second hand, it seems that most windmill installers use them, and as soon as the world finds out how much energy a windmill actually makes that market should implode, the VW emissions scandal will be nothing compared with that lol If ferries etc are on length then a swb would be the better choice, thanks for this! Tam
You know it would make sense to waxoil & wrap the G Wagon in cotton wool as an investment :ninja:
Malinois
Hi, I drive the 4x4 sprinter in ambulance form. It's very good. Not taken it off road, good on fuel even with all the kit we carry and hard driving. No bridge problems etc. Only problem is a very long drop down from the cab. We have had a few into our work as well that's what got me curious about them! Fuji Shooter
Keep the G Wagon - they are uber cool. I hope one day to be able to buy an AMG version. I am looking to convert a 110 currently to a camper with these people, their work is spot on and he has amazing attention to detail. http://www.camperhus.co.uk/9/Land-Rover-Camper.html
Ridgeway Redneck
Steep hills they have over there. Every other car over there was monster trucked, I even saw a Peugeot 205 with 33" tyres!
Beardo
i do work for Mercedes and am always impressed by what the 4x4 (and 6x6) Sprinter can do - here's all the van range going through the paces at Millbrook back in June - you may want to turn the sound off - horrible library music chosen by the client. Edited by me and featuring drone footage from Billy. FYI - the 4x4 have normal road tyres on just to show how well they still perform offroad Oh and all the crashing into barriers is in specially modified vans where we can switch the safety features off to show the difference
