Another renowned high bird shot uses 33g of 3's ..

Not by accident either ... he did a lot of work on the choke/cartridge combination and found that at the range he wanted to kill, that provided the best pattern/penetration combo. He's pretty convincing with it too.

To me, that seems like a responsible approach.

Just watching Dave Carrie at Urra Estate and his clear cased carts are a little bit of fiber wad and rammed with shot that looks like fours.

If you look down at the comments Dave says he uses anything from 34-44gram 5's,4's or 3's through 3/4 and full. But if he had to stick to one it would be 42 gram 4. His comment is about 15 down from the top if you are interested.

Just to come back on topic for a mo' and out of interest, if anyone else was wondering I've just heard back from Hull and the (ES) against the Imperial 7s on their web-site means 'Early Season' Supply will be available in the run up to the season and will normally last into December. The post about the lack of demand for the High Pheasant 7s was correct and is the reason for their absence.

I think these large loads and the height of bird shooting is getting totally crazy .

How many of you feel confident to take on a bird at 60 yards high plus?

W W Greener advocated that a Game gun should be 96 time heavier than the shot load to be comfortable in recoil .

This would result in guns being about 10 and 3/4 lbs in weight .

Acting as a Loader for these Numbskulls would entail you carrying a pair of guns weighing a total of 21 1/2 pounds plus 200 shells weighing over 30 lbs + all their other accessories .

The World really is going mad.

But WHY do they do it?

Why? A combination of fashion and status. They're saying to people "look at me,I'm such a good shot 40-50yd birds are no longer a challenge" They shoot huge loads and tight chokes to imply the same. (I do realise some are excellent shots but the majority arent!) Sadly in commercial shooting money talks and these people spend a lot of it so in turn that's the way the industry has gone.

It's pretty much the same with ramming huge loads down small bores. "Look at me,I'm an expert!) A genuine 50yd pheasant is a tremendous bird and if that's considered beneath some then they should stick to clays.

Its also worth bearing in mind the majority of extreme shoots are showing low guns not high birds. Most the birds shot (at) are gliding. Therefore dropping in height. Its the topography of the ground not the pheasant that's created its height.

I see this day in day out from all perspectives so feel qualified to judge. 30gm 6's kill driven pheasants to 40+yds all day long. Go 32gm 5's for a little further and for better penetration when shooting walked up birds.

I look forward to the day the industry goes full circle and the emphasis is more on the speed/curl and stamina of pheasants rather than the ridiculous ranges we can shoot them at.

I'll leave it there! Apologies to the original OP but I believe his question was answered earlier.

:good: Agreed, bear in mind that by contemporary actual standards and practices Greener's assertion was patently on the optimistic side so that would mean the guns would have to weight even more to cope with 40g loads.

There is no doubt that there are people capable of maintaining the accuracy needed to kill game at extended range without increasing the probability of wounding compared to shorter (but still challenging ranges) but sadly these probably number less than 50 in the whole of the country.

I eagerly await the day technology catches up and we are able to accurately measure, track, film and assess high bird shoots and find out what proportion get pricked by pricks.

Never a need to apologise for a good Post. Yours and the ones either side of it make good sound common sense in my opinion.
