Jakey Boy
Hi All, As I was sat in my motor reccying and hardly a pigeon to be found, I started thinking how in my neck of the woods how many pigeon used to be about, and why have they all gone. One could go out every weekend and find birds feeding, and get bags of 50 - 400 + .... Not no more. Have any of you found this is the case, or was your area once lean but now bountiful ? Why do the pigeons move around en mass ? is this a cycle ? And can I expect them back one day ? Will Aga man one day lose all his pigeons, and he can read my stories of regular big bags. Food For Thought ...
Walker570
Rose tinted glasses maybe. We all remember the brilliant days but tend to forget the total failures.
old'un
Do you have poor pigeon numbers all year round? If its just winter think of how many rape fields there are, I remember back in the early days of rape 70s when the next field might be 5 or more miles away, you would see fields with 2000 plus pigeons. Think its just the fact that pigeons are now spread out over lots of fields, its just a case of to much rape.
Jakey Boy
Yeah, every year the pickings seam to be less and less no matter what time of year. Travel to the surrounding counties and they are everywhere aha.
ditchman
ive had 4 or 5 years lean pickings ...but we have birds back again ...but they are very shy and wary.....very difficult to get into a position to shoot them....i more or less watch everyday and see a flightline develope then shoot that line as soon as it is working...the next day they will go somewhere else... aga man
Me regular big bags? I wish. I have heard recently that Woodpigeon numbers are up as much as 500 % nationwide. They must be out there somewhere. In my very limited experience the woodies are holding up in towns and cities more nowadays Arable and grazing land bordering the towns is the best place to be looking. They are not always feeding where you might expect either. Spotted this lot feeding hard on Clover this afternoon A rubbish photo off my phone but there's probably 600 pigeons there with more joining, i had just spent an hour looking at rape fields. Food For Thought ... You are not alone. My experiance is similar to yours. I did find around 100 pigeons on a rape field ( after checking a few dozen other rape fields ) but they chose well. They were too close to the village with houses on 3 sides of the field. So cant shoot them. The only other birds were a dozen on another rape field , but no traffic onto the field and anyway they looked like they were feeding on chick weed rather than the than the rape. motty
I see big numbers around my parts almost all year. It has seemed quite quiet for the past couple of months, but the pigeons seem to be about everywhere just now.
Wooder
I have only seen the first large flocks on our rape this, hardly seen a pigeon the last few months.
