Konnie
Call them and ask, policies may vary so best be in the right rather than wrong.
bostonmick
i have trailers insured under seperate policies,it states trailer is covered when parked or being towed by any vehicle.but as said if i were you i would check with your insurer as to the extent of cover your policy gives the trailer. ferguson_tom
Normally when the trailer is being towed it is covered by the car insurance but only 3Rd party. So should you hit someone with it or even if the trailer breaks away and causes damage the insurance will pay out whoever you hit but not for the value of your trailer. If it is stolen in petrol station or something it won't be covered. You don't normally have to tell the insurance company you have fitted a tow bar as it's a factory option rather than a modification. moondoggy
You do need to tell your insurance company that you have a towbar fitted. It is always classed as a modification. At least one company (Kwikfit I think) will not insure a car with a towbar fitted. They told me so after I had been insured by them for nearly a year, but had not realised I had to tell them. subsonicnat
Kwikfit,,,I wouldn't even let them fit a tyre..Why.. Had one ftted at 7pm,120 miles later it blew out on the motorwy doing 40mph.. I had just come off the slip road,When it went, made me pay 90% of a new tyre again. Showed them the reciept from the night before in the glove box. And they are into insurance,,,I don't think so.. HDAV
You do have to tell the insurance company you have fitted a towbar Interesting but they cover you for towing as standard but not if you don't tell them you have a towbar?
four-wheel-drive
They was talking on the radio today about how many people that are hurt or killed by trailers breaking free and running people down I never thought about this before when I had a small trailer many years ago probably worth making shore that you are covered. four-wheel-drive
Interesting but they cover you for towing as standard but not if you don't tell them you have a towbar? I do not see why they should worry about it I was told many years ago that having a tow bar fitted to a car / truck is good as it can stop your car from a hole load of damage if someone goes into you rear end also some cars have there fuel tank at the back and stiffening up the back of the car is no bad thing. It will be down to the stats of claims costs
Alycidon
There is another issue with trailers, what you are using them for. If used privately say for taking rubbish to the local tip then no issue but if used to transport goods used for business or doing deliveries for same then a tacho will be needed if the fully laden weight of towing vechicle and trailer when fully laden exceeds 3.5 t. I got pulled off the M6 with a Disco and twin axle IFW, my max train weight was 5.5 tonnes and no tacho !!, luckily it was a Police training excercise but I was told to get one fitted asap. I could have been fined £1500. My local mower agent was pulled and prosecuted for exactly that a short time after. A
