fortune
Wife & I went out to look at buying a new car for her. We went to an industrial park where there are many dealerships and we walked from one to another. The sales people were appallingly inept. We went to ford, no one available to advise only receptionist. Honda >> reasonable, only one sales person on duty and he was juggling four customers at the same time. Toyota >> Spotty boy, and in the words of Lord Sugar he didn’t have a bloody clue. No idea of any specs or prices or anything. Skoda, only one bloke available, friendly, reasonable knowledge. Vw, Only one salesman and he was with a customer and he ignord us. Spotty boy on the first desk in ignored us. I asked him for help / advise. He replied in a whisper that he didn’t work there and couldn’t help us. Why was he there. >> On to Peugeot. First spotty boy asked us if we were ok and would we like a cup of coffee. ?? No we wanted product information. He didn’t know anything, he would go and get someone. # 2 arrives. He doesn’t know much either. Neither had any idea of model on display or the specifics of that model or price or anything. They didn’t have a bloody clue >>> On to Nissan. Yep the guy is reasonably alert and knows what the wheels are and gives us some literature on the car on display and was ok. By this time we’ve seen & had enough and cant be bothered to trail around any more showrooms. The best bit was that only one of these fellows knew how to open the bonnet of the display cars. Buying a car seems to have diminished to the buying of a tin of beans. I’ll have the red one. Duhh. Sign here. I think that I should apply to be a sort of happy car shopper person. They are a rabble. It was something like an episode of the apprentice. Sugar would have gone all belligerent.
Davyo
They are selling finance mate not cars lol, as silly as it sounds that's the fact.Be it a car or a plate of jelly,I've never met a salesman yet who knows his cars.Remember when the Calibra 1st came out.I wanted to order one and Evans Halshaw then Vardy just down the road had a demonstrator in.Salesman jumped on me the minute I got my car."Lovely car sir, best I've ever driven, been using one since the day it came out, shall we go for a test drive?" So we got in this Demo and it was parked up facing a wall. The lying toe rag couldn't find reverse, I even jokes about his 'so called statement earlier regarding he'd been driving one for a few week's.He didn't get the sarcasm lol, nore did he get the sale.I called his mate over and ordered through him, that really got up his nose. saddler
Gun trade too. Last importers I worked at, ONE of the staff was an FAC holder. Nobody else shot as a hobby. Waste of skin most of them! ALL about sales targets & meeting bonus minimums. Even told how to "adjust" RFD orders to offload more stock. Pisspoor lack of legal knowledge too. They'd imported & retailed a quantity of push daggers (approx 7 years back) Illegal to sell or import since the late 80's. Shocking.
Schmitty
A thought to the OP ....Maybe its because its B/H Monday and most are having a day off with their families Edited April 17, 2017 by Schmitty
saddler
A thought to the OP ....Maybe its because its B/H Monday and most are having a day off with their families ...they've fooled someone into marrying them? Don't know anyone that'd tie the knot with a car salesman!

fortune
A thought to the OP ....Maybe its because its B/H Monday and most are having a day off with their families perhaps this shows the shortcomings with their mentality. B/H Mon is one of the days that all sailsmen should be on deck fully operational. It was patently obvious in the Honda dealership. The guy said that it had been bonkers and he had sold several cars. when we were in there he was jungling 3 others & me one of which he was trying to hand over a new car to. I know that everyone wants to spend time with their family at such times work is work and if your selling you got to be there when the customers are there. no point in having four salesmen in there tomorrow when I'm back at work. still they can polish the fingerprints off the cars. sishyplops
The other side of the argument is that we the consumer want products cheaper and cheaper and cheaper so the companies selling products cannot afford decent salaries for experienced knowledgable sales people so they have to supply cheap spotty stand ins And 9 times out of 10 the consumer has made their mind up what they want to buy before they walk into a shop/showroom so a spotty sales assistant is all hat is required Just saying tin hat on but you know I'm right Ive worked in engineering sales for many years and we now take admin staff out of the office and get them to sell to save paying for experienced people

I have been on a manufacturers website tonight and yes it gives some info but it is all a bit vague as to the real spec. it really seems to be like buying a box of matches or a tin of beans but for many thousands of pounds
sishyplops
Go during the week when it's quieter and find the oldest sales person you can find would be my advice, Toyota or Honda would be my reference as they generaly understand their target audience All the best with it
four-wheel-drive
It seems to me that like with most things these days what they want it not for people to call in they want you to phone and make an appointment you tell them what you are looking for and they can get all of the answers ready for when you arrive. that is why if you are going to look at a second hand car they hate you to just turn up as it does not give them a chance to get the car started as it will probably have a flat battery and give a bad impression of them. Red-dot
Arnold Clarks sales people regard families going to look at cars on Sundays and bank holidays as just out for a cheap days entertainment.... Most initial genuine sales start from a phonecall usually during the week.
Davyo
We ready have the wife's car picked when she's due to renew. We will simply phone to see how quick the colour and spec are available. Then pop down to pay a deposit and pick a registration so estimate being in the garage 15/20 max.Next visit will be simply to collect the car. al4x
Go during the week when it's quieter and find the oldest sales person you can find would be my advice, Toyota or Honda would be my reference as they generaly understand their target audience All the best with it My other half dropped her rav 4 into Toyota last week due to some issues and got talking to a salesman. Suggested she would like a new shape invincible spec one, in the teens money wise but being fussy manual not black or white. During the day he came back with 3 options, first one a black auto, second was well out of budget and the third a hybrid and he spent ages trying to convince her to buy one..... apparently she can't get a manual invincible in other colours as they are like hens teeth....... auto trader suggests otherwise
fortune
So what were the tech details of the one that she has got that the salesman thinks are worthy of buying a new model? Apart from his sales figures? Perhaps they have got 5 black and white hybrid autos in stock that they have to shift well before the new letter comes out so that they can buy another load in to get the dealer bulk discount.
