bornfree
Just seen a bird in my garden it was probing through the snow into the lawn, it looked like a small woodcock but with a curved beak, couldn't tell the colour as it was under streetlights. Any ideas?

It looked very short legged but as there is 2" of snow it probably looked shorter than is was.
JDog
I saw a snipe just outside this village this afternoon. That might fit the bill apart from the curved beak. Might you be mistaken on that point?

It could have been the reflection in the snow, but my wife saw it as well and she said it had a curved beak.
panoma1
Don't know of any British bird smaller that a woodcock with a curved bill! Certainly not a corncrake as someone suggested they're as big as a moorhen and it's in the wrong location, at the wrong time of year! The description is inadequate to make an accurate identification! Yellow Bear
I can only think of 2 curved bill "waders", curlew and Whimbrel but it is the wrong time of year for both and they are larger than woodcock
