impala59
A Job that I've not really been looking forward too was removing a stuck Winchoke from my Model 1200. This was stuck fast when I got the gun (at a good price I should say!) and someone had had a go with a pipe wrench or slip-joints. It is a knurled type with about 1/4" exposed, usually removed with a single pin wrench in one of two side indents. Both of these had been rounded out probably by repeated attempts to remove the choke. I have over the last few weeks soaked in WD40, Diesel and 3 in one penetrating oil with no success. I tried dipping the barrel in boiling water and using a freeze spray n the inside. I tried copious amounts of heat from the heat gun (not happy to use the blow torch) All of this with no success (I had fashioned a tool that would grip both indents from an old adjustable spanner) The indents were insufficient to get purchase on the thing so my decision was to sacrifice the choke. I drilled through the indents and tapped to M4, I slipped over a steel tube with an inside diameter of 23mm and put an M4 High Tensile bolt through the assembly. With a 10mm bar through my steel tube, the barrel firmly wrapped in rags in the vice and a 2' extension I finally got movement. With more WD40 applied, I gradually removed the choke. The entire thread length was rusted but has cleaned up remarkably and now screws in and out like new! My problem is this, while I had decided that the choke would be sacrificed, its not in bad condition at all. I have redressed the knurling with a needle file and apart from the 4mm holes that sit at 5 and 11 o'clock when in situ this choke seems perfect. What is the forums opinion regarding using this choke? I know porting is quite common now so I would guess that these holes would cause little difference. I will be getting other chokes anyway but having this 'modified' choke would save buying another

TIGHTCHOKE
I would happily use it and would shoot a few patterns at cardboard just to prove it is not suffering an impaired pattern, if there is no rough surface inside it should not affect any pattern. Gordon R
I would use it. No different to ported chokes - check for smooth edges as Tightchoke says.
Jaymo
Use it- but god did I hate those chokes on my 1500xtr back in the 80’s ( then again I didn’t like the slide release either)
Scully
I had a similar problem with a 1300 XTR I'd just bought. I took it to a local farrier who heated it up and out it came. I'd use it the one you've had removed, no problem. I use to have a good selection of Winchokes, but let them go one by one; now I find myself ratching through dealers 'spares' boxes whenever I get the chance. I have a Full in my 1500 XTR and a Full in my S&W pump....Winchokes fit the S&W nicely. As an aside, Teague make some nice stainless extended to fit the full Winchester range which are all interchangeable through the various models. impala59
Thank you gentlemen, I shall pattern (no burrs or rough edges in the choke) but will get some others anyway, cylinder and 3/4 hopefully
