Stimo22
I have just started to build a raise bed in my allotment . Got some decent used timber and would welcome some suggestions on the best wood preservative to use on the wood before I put it in the ground. Is the creasote replacement called creocoat any good
Guest
Creosote will kill the plants I believe .get the water based wood preservative that will not harm the plants
bornfree
Creosote which you can still buy if you look in the right places mixed with used engine oil.

hambone
If your making raised beds try lining the inside with black DPM it keeps the earth off the wood so it lasts a bit longer. Any contamination from creosote or old engine oil (good preservatives) is also separated from your vegetables.
figgy
Lay the boards flat and soak them in the sun with used engine oil, evrytime it soaks in wet it again until it wont take anymore. Soak the end grain more as it will suck it up. Line the inside with Plastic like visqueen if your bothered about it possibly contaminating your soil, should stop it rotting for decades. Graham M
I always thought oil rotted wood. It certainly doesn't do gun stocks any good.
