I do have meths, but if I have to cart around two fuels with the lamp, don't think it'll be for me. I was thinking a strip of cloth dipped in paraffin wrapped round the bottom of the vapouriser tube, light it, wait until warm, light lamp? You start them with the little clip thing which you keep in a small jar of meths, clip this around the bottom of the vaporiser, light this to heat the mantle, pump the pressure pump on the tank only about 10 times to start with, once the mantle is good and hot start to open the valve at the bottom of the vaporiser do this slowly until the mantle starts to glow, open the valve too quickly you will flood the mantle with paraffin and it will just burst into flames and you will have to start the process all over again. Once the mantle starts to glow and give off light pump the lamp to full pressure about 30 pumps. I have a brass bottomed one which has done many winter beach fishing trips, they are temperamental things there is a hardware shop near me that still stock all the spare. Dougy
The sound of them running is un-forgetfull, takes me back to the good old scouting camps, i touched the mantel once and it disintegrated, lesson learnt.

We just used the standard pre-heater that clips around the vaporiser tube, but dipped it in paraffin when meths was unavailable. They are still on sale: http://tilleylamp.co.uk/pre-heating-torch More info about Tilley lamps here: https://www.base-camp.co.uk/instruction.html
sandspider
Thanks all. I know how you're supposed to light them, I just don't want to have to lug meths around as well as paraffin if it can be avoided...

strimmer_13
May I suggest taking a little bottle of meths? Use a 20ml vape bottle, won't take a lot of room in a bag. I always used a jar like everyone suggested Or buy the anchor lamp, there is a quick start method with that, but if I remember right it was hit and miss whether the mantle blew a hole or not. Wb123
If you don’t want to use meths try using one of those small jet lighters to warm the vaporiser. Works very well for my whisperlite.
