pigeon controller
Was the last Shoot before Christmas When we all had a premonition Not a bird was stirring not even a Pigeon That tended to sum up the last days shooting before Christmas, We had driven out to an area that we had seen birds over the past weeks and left them alone to settle into a routine on the rape which was poor. We had seen them in the worst conditions with the rain etc now today was dry with a good wind and bright sunshine . They must be feeding in a frenzy by now, WRONG. We had driven over one hundred miles today looking for birds and found four flocks of approx fifty maximum. We watched , no joining birds just the same birds playing" Follow the leader" we would spook them off the field to the trees one would drop back and they would all follow. If we had set up they would just leave the field. We had started out at 08.00 and by 12.00 we were on the fourth flock, So we decided the give it ago and set up. We had seen the birds on this rape before and they favoured a far corner of the second field from the road, Surprise, Surprise, The longest walk from the access point. due to the previous wet conditions we only had six quality decoys, so two on the magnet and three on spikes and one flyer. The wind was strong and on our backs. The flightline to this field was along a stream with a line of Alders which made the birds approach to our left then divert across to the right in front of us and approach the decoys. The first two pairs came in perfectly and paid the price. During the rest of the day we knew we were in the right position as we had high crossing birds out of range just closed their wings and drop to the decoys like stones. We had been set up for 12.30 and shot till 15.30 and at the end of the day we had picked up sixtyseven birds which was enjoyable shooting. As This is the last post before Christmas , can I wish all members of Pigeon Watch a Happy and Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year. 67 Pigeons, Merry Christmas Edited December 23, 2019 by pigeon controller
