Dunkield
We are off fishing boat fishing the Avon in Worcestershire this coming weekend, and although almost all our fishing will be bait fishing for Pike, I have made a short lightweight spinning rod to take along as well for a bit of variety. It is a cut down fly rod, so pretty light actioned, I have bought a vintage Mitchell reel and will have loaded with 4lb or so line. So. As things seemed to have moved on a bit since I last looked at them, what are some good, reasonably priced spinners/spoons/lures worth looking at - and where to get them before Friday? I haven't whipped all the rings on yet, so I haven't tested it out, but hopefully the rod will cast anything up to about 10 grams max? Cranfield
If I was spinning for anything, where pike were, I would use at least 8lb line and a light wire trace. Perch may be the target, but I guarantee if you use light line and no wire trace, you will hook (and lose) a pike. For lures in a river, I would suggest a couple of red "flying C" and some spinnerbaits. Spinnerbait. Flying C. Most decent tackle shops will carry a range of these lures. Have a good trip and lets see some pictures of fish.

Dunkield
Thanks for the replies gents. I will be using a trace, I will make some up this week, and I originaly was going for 2-3llb line but for the reasons you have stated Cranners I decided to up it a bit. The idea is based on the Wanless Wand from an old fishing book I have, and that is whet he used, but I think that would be irresponsible, if pike and zander are present. In the same place we will be fishing, last yea I caught a jack pike on a 3m whip with 2lb line, and that wasn't much fun I may compromise and go for 6lb line, but to go any heavier may spoil the lightness of the outfit and it's ability to cast ultralight lures. Maybe I should be looking at braided line, and not mono? I have some old ABU spinners but looking at the money 'vintage' lures go for on ebay I am worried about loosing them now. Harris have these spinnerbaits discounted to £1 each at the moment so I may order some of those today.
henry d
For perch I always got good results with small sandeel lures on a long paternoster. Like this only shorter, 50-75mm long.
Dunkield
Another one to try never thought of that H. Well, things have moved on a bit since I posted earlier on today I have finished my new Wand and it looks pretty good too. I'll upload a few pictures in a bit. I went for 5lb line so just have to load up my new, but actually 30 year old reel, the rod is so small and has athrough action I think that will be fine. I forgot how addictive rod building is, I made a few in the past I might get back into it again. Little wonder I get accused of having 'obsessional behaviour' at home
new to the flock
Stuart, Why not go to a 6 lb Berkly Fireline?......It has a 2lb mono diameter and will allow your rod to behave as intented. NTTF
Paul in North Lincs.
I would up.. to at least an 8lb bs line if there the chance of a pike............... ..................an on the other end I'd aatch the old faithfull ondex spoon...................which has been the demise of many a large perch & pike
vole
Definitely braid I say too.I use 15lb on my spinning set up.Better hook set and will land anything. As for spinners....Harris sportsmail had Rublex Ondex Rublex spinners for a quid each. One of the best if you ask me too.Decathlon do a useful pack of 3 Rapala 1 inch plugs for about £11. Harris hard to beat for selection.Tight lines!! http://www.harrissportsmail.com/Categories...CategoryID=2174
lurcherboy
Have you ever tried spiderwire Stuart ? When I was carp fishing I moved on to this kevlar braid and gave all the others the heave-ho. LB
Dunkield
I was given some braided line a few years ago and have to say after the initial problems of getting the knots right I quite like it. I went for Maxima Chameleon (which my old favourite) this time just to try the new rig out, but I was going to ask about these new lines - if I hadn't rushed out to buy mono I would have got some. Having read these replies I will definitely give braid a go - thanks for the advice.
Dunkield
Not sure if there are any other budding rod builders on here, but here is what the lightweight setup looks like. Last week it was a 6 weight 4 piece 9' 6" fly rod that I never used (I built it years ago from a decent blank) now it is a 3 piece spinning rod. I got all the bits fairly easily online, even though it seems to be a bit of a dying art so someone somewhere must still making rods in the UK. It looks and feels right, I will have to see how it fishes. I bought the 'vintage' reel on ebay and stripped it, then completely rebuilt it - luckily it has been a quiet week
Dougy
just a caution when using braid it has virtually no stretch,( i'm sure you know anyway) be carefull not to pull your hooks and mind you dont snap your rod if you do get a decent pike, ive seen it done ive used fireline on feeder set ups when fishing at distance in Eire brill stuff, also for drifter float fishing for pike but in 20lb B)
Dunkield
Wise words Dougy I did think about that, that and the fact it seems to be about £10 for 100 yards As we boat fish you can't afford to be too careful, one of my mates still uses a fibreglass rod that I made years ago, as it has a very 'through' action. As you know they can lunge at the last moment so we tend to play them off the reel without anti-reverse, these aren't monster stillwater fish but as they live in fast running water they know a thing or 2 about scrapping! Dunkield
And the winner was . . . ABU active spin in Perch colours. I didn't even clip anything else on as this spinner in 7grms seemed to do the business everytime. We didn't do that much spinning but it caught perch up to about 2.5 - 3lbs and jack pike. Funniest/scariest moment was hooking a jack of about a 1lb and then a bigger pike of about 6lb grabbing hold of that one On a tiny rod with 5lb line was interesting to say the least, luckily the bigger one just let go when it surfaced and saw us. I will stick some pictures up in the photo section when they are sent through to me, a nice zander was cuaght and I would like an expert opinion of roughly how heavy it was (as it was returned and all 3 of us forgot scales  ) Here is the spinner in 7 and 12grams, my local shop does them for £2 and I can't see them anywhere else online for that sort of money so I am off to buy all their stock

Dunkield
Like Christmas Jon, "it is coming" the trouble is with video as well file sizes are huge these days so I think he is doing it the old fashioned way - Royal Mail Having looked at last years pics I reckon it was bigger than that, and that was estimated at 9-10lbs
