Scully
Watched this last night. At least with the Burton, Nolan etc movies, you know you’re firmly starting off in the realms of fantasy, meaning the films genre is already established. Apart from this film being set in Gotham city, which wasn’t apparent at the outset, I wasn’t sure of which camp this film was set. No outrageous, hard to believe storyline or stylised stunts, no super ( anti ) hero antics, just a portrayal of an already disturbed mind sinking further and further into insanity. Creepily disturbing and superbly acted for no comic effect whatsoever, by Phoenix. Not exactly lighthearted Christmas viewing, but OH wanted to watch it, which meant injured ribs or not, it was up to me to let the dogs out at bedtime lest there was a clown sat in the lean to in the paddock! 🤡
humperdingle
Went to the cinema to see this when it first came out… I thought it was a remarkable film and an amazing performance by Joaquin Phoenix. As you say, quite dark compared to most films of the genre but really enjoyable.
Mice!
I watched half of it and gave up, there just wasn't enough going on. I expected it to show how the Joker came to be, then start a series of Joker films, JP certainly played the part well though.
Zapp
I have zero interest in any of the superhero movies or franchises, but I made a point of watching this and really enjoyed it for the reasons already stated. A brilliant performance by Phoenix.
ShootingEgg
I think it was a very cleverly put together film and showed how the Joker came to be. As said quite a dark film and casted superbly with Phoenix being the main character.

I'll admit it's a slow burn, and you have to start it knowing it's an artistic film rather than a standard super hero/villain movie. It does get better, but I struggled with the pace. I will give Phoenix credit for a wonderful performance, but it wasn't for me.

The Mrs told me it was an Artistic film about 30 mins in, I thought it was going to get going when he kicked off on the train, but it wasn't for me. 16 hours ago, Benthejockey said: I fought my way through it but it did nothing for me. When I'm falling asleep watching a film there has to be something wrong, I normally want to know how things end, but I haven't gone back to it, dodged a bullet 🙃
