Baldrick
I faced the same decision about 6 months ago, and asked the same question on this forum. I ended up buying a Td5 Discovery, albeit in manual, and for my needs it is a superb vehicle. I use it as a farm vehicle, a shoot vehicle, and I use it for business and it does the job in every respect. I am sure I will get shot down by the Nissuzumitsu brigade, all citing reliability problems, however (touch wood), the Disco has performed splendidly. BSA Shaun
Hilux or L200? I'd say just that, but without the question mark at the end. Only put that there because it was a suggestion mate. Would like to add defender 90 to that list too.
LEFTY478
I got one of these! And very good it it is, too!
Dr W
Hilux or L200? I'd say just that, but without the question mark at the end. Both are great trucks. The turning circle of any long vehicle is a little on the large side, you just have to know how to drive the thing properly. I doubt you'll get a new shape crew cab for under £10K, but the old one is fine. I have a 2000 model L200 4life with 95k on the clock for sale for £5k, it has a couple of small dings in the tail gate but nothing major. For £10k you should get something pretty tidy, and with the chip upgrade they're plenty quick enough. L200 if you like smacking your head on the roof every time you go over a bump. Mate has a work one and its dreadful and plastic, the same mate however has an R reg diesel range rover which you can pick up for about £10k and it's a dream to ride in. Find a decent one with gas conversion and you're laughing.
twelvebore
Just a thought... A friend of mine has a Lexus RX300, fantastic motor, you couldn't complain about anything inside, smooth ride and a 4x4, just not sure if they would come in diesel, or your price range. dazbrit
I'd say make sure you get a japanese model, they seam to be the most reliable. i have had a nissan terrano now for a good few years and it has never let me down.
Mungler
X3 or X5. Forget the diesel bit - are you a farmer or a taxi driver? Also you don't need industrial off road - the last time we went off roading I recall was when you were ****** and I drove your car into a field, it got stuck and we had a long walk
BSA Shaun
X5. X5 maybe but didn't the X3 get terrible reviews for off road ability and it looks awful!
DaveK
Never mind the Gucci Pouf stuff. Get yourself a 2nd hand Daihatsu Fourtrak and buy lots of guns and stuff with the change. You know it makes sense. Why buy something you'd be frightened to get scratched?
twelvebore
Go for diesel, you can't run a petrol on SVO !!

Will smell like a mobile chippy but wont be spending £100 a week on petrol...

Would like to add defender 90 to that list too. Did he not ask for:- 1. An automatic? 2. Reasonable fuel economy? 3. Reliability? I don't know of a Defender that offers any of the above! I'm not questioning the fact that they are the best 4x4xFar, but it comes at a high price
ME
OK, so to clarify. My off roading involves occasionally going up the kerb and driving down some bumpy lanes to clay shoots. I dont want or need a pick up truck. I need something that has some presence on the road but wont cost the earth. LEXUS RX300 - dont do diesel Mitsubishi Sport - terrible reviews and dont do auto diesel X5 - the 4.4 or 4.8 is being given away due to the (petrol) fuel consumption, the diesel is too expensive Range Rover - for £10k it would be old and probably a petrol Rav 4 - wife got one Xtrail - too like the Rav 4 CRV - too like the Rav 4 Freelander - too unreliable Shogun - too big Disco - too unreliable Merc ML - affordable but some dodgy write ups about poor US build quality Jeep Grande Cherokee - affordable, do an auto diesel, presence on the road, could pick up a 2001 or 2002 with low miles......... tosspot
LV stand out from the the crowd and invest some of your hard earned shekels on a luverly Dacia Duster you know it makes sense TP
MC
Disco series 2 is what you need LV, everything else is in hairdresser terrortory (spelling?) Don't know where you get the unreliable bit from? mine has 120K on the clock starts on the button and has never had anything done other than normal wear and tear. Mind you now I have said that it will probably break down tomorrow.
NorfolkBoy
LV Don't overlook the Merc ML's. Its true that the early '98 - 2000 models were a bit **** to say the least - but MB quickly put that right. We bought a 2002 ML320 with 42K miles earlier this year and its been great I'd imagine the diesel's are pretty good as well.

I heard that they go thru brake discs like butter. Bearing in mind that I set light to the rear discs on my Jag driving like a maniac going from one shoot to another the other week, this is not what I need.... Mungler
LB had an idea on another thread - Merc G Wagon. Expensive though. Autotrader link >>here<< Didn't realise you could cough £13k for an "L" reg with 100k + on the clock
BSA Shaun
Merc ML - affordable but some dodgy write ups about poor US build quality Jeep Grande Cherokee - affordable, do an auto diesel, presence on the road, could pick up a 2001 or 2002 with low miles......... Makes me laugh you put american poor build on the merc but not the cherokee! And also has the worlds smallest rear seat leg room for a car the size of an aircraft carrier. The Jeep doesnt get a good write up for cornering (but then what Yank car does ?). The other critiscism is the rear legroom as you rightly say. The reviews dont say anything about poor build on the Jeep....I await all the links to reviews now !!...........
BSA Shaun
I've heard something about the rear axles on these can't remember exactly what is was tho............... One of my best mates has one in a V8 and sounds great, looks good and is comfy to be fair (unless you are in the back!), just sure there was something about them, maybe I am getting confused with the cherokee? Wouldn't like to run or service it tho

Jeep Grand Cherokee's have a reputation for dangerous handling (thats by American standards as well). After one experience I have vowed never to even ride in one again. I think that the Mk1 Jeeps were assembled in Austria ride and very cramped in the back. I had a Mk 2 3.7L for two years and they were much better - seat upholstery did'nt wear very well.
