We enjoy Swiss Chard and a short row will provide greens for half a year, french beans and broad beans to freeze this is in a small patch 2yards by 15yrds. A row of carrots to pull at. Problem is as told by one of our members, sell by dates are so important on vegetables with a huge amount of waste. I grow spuds in large plastic containers, onions all year round and tomatoes/cucumbers during the warmer months. This year one Tomato plant was producing 15-20 (cherry) Tomatoes a day which we could not eat but nobody wanted them, must have binned 3-400 of them. Aled
I think all of us are going to have to make changes as to how we live our lives. Like others I grow my own veg (but i enjoy that anyway!), cut my own logs, and my hobbies do provide me with some healthy meat and fish. I've had a surplus of French Beans this year, left them in a box outside the front gate with a for free sign, fair play they've all gone! I have a supply of plastic 40 gall drums which I cut in half. Used some last year to grow some early potatoes very succesfully and will be planting more this year. I also grow courgettes in these which do very well. The hot weather this year devastated my early crop of french beens but the second sowing is in the freezer. We rarely buy vegs other than red cabbage...my wife makes fantastic red cabbage with orange juice etc etc ... It is so easy to grow supplies even in the smallest patch of ground and it hasn't been shipped from overseas. We also have a large orchard, apples pears plums damazenes and medlars and invite members of the village to come and share as we cannot cope with the quantity. We have one of those peelers, slicers corers which is brilliant and we freezer a large quantity of fruit for the winter crumbles and pies. Our two freezers are full of winter supplies home produced plus a whole lamb from a neighbour. Yes things will be a bit tighter but will just cut back on the unnecessary things. 12 driven days this winter instead of normal 20 plus for instance. 3.9 gas guzzler off the road replaced by a 50 mpg 4x4. bruno22rf
A 50mpg 4x4, I've bought an electric moped, 250W, no tax, no insurance nor MOT, does 20mph and costs 13p/25 miles so much better for running up town than using the car. Almost finished typing an answer and the system wiped it off. I have a friend in the trade looking for a nice Fiat Panda Cross 4x4. It will tick all the boxes for me. I don't need a big 4x4 these days as all of my towing and hauling is behind me. ( no pun intended, honest) Just need a 4x4 capable of traversing farm tracks and grass fields for my shooting activities and the Panda will do that in spades plus around 50mpg rather than 12mpg. We have a nice Jaguar X Type AWD estate which I paid a small fortune for from a one lady owner, full service records and only 55 thou on the clock. £4000 that is for high days and holidays.
