A bit of an odd cartridge.  RTO..#9 shot.... 65mm... 30grm. Eley grand prix. It's almost like the shot size stamp had been printed upside down. They would have been a good wodland pheasant cartridge in a lightweight sbs  if that had been the case. It's a shame that you are so far away.

Ps. Are they paper or plastic case.? And are they fibre or plaswad ?

Hi Minky,

These are quite old cartridges, size 9 is printed on the rolled end,  they are plastic case, It does not say on them anywere fibre or plaswad.

I can’t remember Eley selling Grand Prix in size 9, Seems they must have, the silver heads were 1970’s I believe, and not made for long, soon went back to brass colour. They cost about £1.20 a box then! They are felt wads and number 9 shot was only available in the rolled turnover type.

With all that info I can well see them being ideal for snipe or woodcockcout of a lightweight sbs.  But how many cartridges would a snipe or woodcock shooter ever use.?  Perhaps that's why this slab was complete except for one box.  I wonder what  the history is.   Ireland perhaps.  Of all of the head that I've shot, I've only ever shot one snipe and that was a bit of a fluke.  There was some marsh fields that had flooded.   We didn't even realize that there were any snipe on the field and as we got over the fence on our way out to the river bank the field lifted.  By the time I  had gotten cartridges in I basically just pack shot and one unlucky one out of the thousand fell. I don't think that it tasted very good.  years ago now. Shot loads of woodcock.

Now they are sold and good luck to the buyer it wouldn't surprise me if they are collectors cartridges with very few of them being made and still in the original boxes , no one on the forum seemed to have any in there collection, and we were told that 9s were a one off .:hmm:

Hi marsh man,

It is a collector that has brought them, he says from about 1970 they were a special order in 9s from eley, when they could shoot starlings from the heaps and buildings around the farms.

A snipe and woodcock shooter will fire alot of cartridges over a season!

And these would do the job for woodcock,  especially in snap shooting in heavy cover.

I've never seen many snipe over I the South East.  Woodcock can be vary variable with a piece of ground showing quite a lot and another place never having them.  Very few snipe on game carts and a few woodcock.  But that's just in my area of the southeast
