Get yourself out and knock on doors. Do a search, theres plenty of advice. Every now and again some decent sort will post up wanting a bit of help in exchange for shooting. Do it, put yourself out, it wont just be given, certainly not by someone who has worked hard to build up their shooting.

In the meantime you could join the local gun club that shoots .22's and get some practice in. After a minimum of 3 month probation you will hopefully become a full member; when you apply for your FAC you can then have both target shooting and vermin control as good reasons. That way if you havent found land permission by then you can still get the rifle and target shoot until you do.

One thing to watch is that you probably won't get approval for a moderator for the rifle until you put in a variation to shoot on your land permissions.

mr_colt.

P.S: If you have got permission for land with foxes then get a .243/.223 centrefire instead. I wouldnt use a .22 Rimfire on foxes; I just worry that it could lead to unclean kills at range.

Can just imagine.

you apply for a Fire arm certificate, the fire arms officer knocks on your door, starts the interview by asking you

"why do you want a rifle"

your reply is ;-

" i really want a fac and a rifle "

you have no land to shoot over at the moment, so the answer will be as you can expect

"No land to shoot on, no need for an air rifle, let alone a rimfire"

as said above get some land to shoot on first  its how you need to go on.

best of luck

Join a club! You can get the rifle for target shooting until you find land. Knock on the door of every farm around you and be polite. You may even find someone at the gun club who could help you out. If you shoot shotguns there's bound to be a gamekeeper there who you can chat up for some permission. Just because they write you a permission slip it doesn't mean you have to shoot there, if you get what I mean

IMO someone who really really wants a rifle but can't be bothered with either joining a club or knocking on a few doors either doesn't really really want one or shouldn't really really be granted one.

There is a local sell everything type tat shop near me that sells low powered bb guns and little plastic men that you can knock over with them.

Maybe that is more up your street? then you won't ever have to ask for permission or put yourself out in any way.

I thought Radcliffes was better than that MC

Cartridge,

As somebody who is in a similar position do what I did join a Rifle club (albeit not a local one) and see how you get on. I really should have applied for full membership by now, but I haven't been for a while due to other commitments. I fully intend to keep going though if only for the practise and for the fact that I find it quite stressfree. I know I am never going to be the best shot or that i can consistently turnup but still worth doing. Like others have said go that route and then at least you can get your FAC for target shooting before you get land to shoot over and when you do get land fill in a variation.

Yeah we are all thinking it, but no one wants to say it incase it is seen as putting the boot in.

When I made my firearms application I asked for section 1 shotty, .22 and .223. I got some good advice on here to ask for too much and then negotiate - so they get to say no to something.

The FAO asked if I needed the Section 1 shotty.

I said I only really wanted .22 but because he said I couldn't shoot a fox with one I now needed .223.

The section 1 shotty got lost in the negotiations (they don't like them, and you know they are thinking worst case scenario of of a 9 shot semi auto in a shopping centre)

My exact words were:

"I need FAC to do a job and pop a few foxes. I always thought that FACs were like the old saying about politicians - all the people who really really really want to be politicians should not be allowed to be politicians and those who really really really want a particular gun and an FAC shouldn't be allowed one".

Right i am joining a rifle club and afetr 6 months i will get a .22 rf and when i find land it will make me look better because i know how to use a rifle.

I know it's hard work, but nothing good in the world is easy to find. If you work hard for what you want, you'll eventually get it in most cases. Join the gun club and get your probation over with (mine took ten weeks not six months). You may find it easier to get permission with an air rifle or shotgun and then move up to a rifle, as the latter is a little more of a safety issue and you really do need to be aware of what's around you.

I never enjoyed playing computer games, and have never owned a PS2 or any other junk that's available. The shooting part is unrealistic and pointless to me. Ever since I was old enough to go out on my own I've been in the fields snaring rabbits and learning how to stalk. My first "shot" rabbit was taken with a black widow catapult at about 15 yards, after I spent half an hour led in brambles hoping it would come back out of its hole! To get instant access to shooting land without working at it is almost impossible unless you've known the landowner for ages like I had. Being young doesn't help! Keep at it, and get some BASC insurance. That way you look just a little bit more sensible than the rest of the kids your age, and the farmers may just give you a chance. Once you get the chance, don't waste it. Never take anything for granted because if you do, one day you'll lose it! Good luck <_<
