Hi all!

I will hopefully be picking up a GSP bitch in May and am looking for some guidance/pointers (excuse the pun), on land or who to approach locally to gain permission to start training her.

All being well I’d love to be picking up for local shoots/Suffolk area in the near future.

If anyone knows anyone who would possibly allow me and guide me in the right direction send me a little message 🙂👍🏼

This is NOT a recommendation! Just a passing of information from my own research ready for me to use his services.

Andy Waterhouse of Roman river gundogs. A panel spaniel judge known for working up springer and cocker field trial champions. And also known for his work with hpr breeds. Based I believe at brightlingsea with his own land including rabbit pen. £40 per hour 1 to 1 basis I will be going to him with my Gsp this year.

Well worth it. He's a good chap.

I presume from your post you have no ground to shoot/train over? Not to worry it will be some months before you will need any for serious field work, in that time go do some door knocking.

What experience have you in training? Is the dog just for picking up? Do you know any local shoots to pickup on?

Try your local wild fowling clubs , they have gundog training for all ages in the Spring and Summer months and I don't think you need to be a member , or you never need to be , you pay a small amount of money for the duration and that is it , well worth it as doors could open up for you for training throughout the week . GOOD LUCK      MM

Thanks Marsh Man and Old’un! I’m definitely interested in trying some wildfowling this year and so is my wife. We both attempted to make contact a year or so ago but due to the pandemic and other restrictions we received no reply.

We have both had dogs in the past but not trained them for hunting/picking up etc. We have already visited specific HPR groups and will be attending as many of those sessions as we can. We have plenty of time before we will be looking for places but just trying to get an idea of what’s about at the moment locally.

thanks all 😊

You could turn up at the gun dog training sessions even if you haven't yet got your puppy to see how they go about during the basics like sit and stay and walking to heel . they will also answer any questions you have got and you will be talking to like minded people , I know both Yarmouth and Norwich do Summer gundog training but if that is to far then it would be worth enquiring with your local clubs .

Based on what you have said and with little or no experience of training a working dog I would suggest the link given earlier would be a good road to follow, they are not far from you and it will be money well spent...http://www.romanrivergundogtraining.co.uk/gundog-training.html

Do you have any farms/land where you can train the dog?

Unfortunately not - we only moved up this way during the pandemic. Our shooting took a back step like everyone’s during this time and work took preference.

Both my wife and I are looking to get properly back into shooting this year and hopefully we will find a farm/land where we can train our puppy and take it out with us on a regular basis.

Being new to the area doesn’t help with knowing where all the local farms are although I’m starting to work it out. It wasn’t really appropriate to go knocking on random doors with the pandemic going on.

Fingers crossed this year we will find some local land and start enjoying a hobby we love to do, together again!

yep, its not difficult to get your foot in the door but it does take a lot of leg work, its all about your approach and what you ask for, you really need to find somewhere where you can work the dog and eventually shot over it.

Like I said before, as you have little or no experience of training a working dog you should really look at that link as its not just about training your dog but also training you, I have seen lots of people mess up big time when they don't know what they are doing.

Can I ask why you have gone for a GSP?

We are going to be joining the Norfolk and Suffolk HPR club amongst over things to socialise and train the dog.

My wife grew up in a family who bred collies and showed. I have grown up with retrievers and Spaniels. The GSP we have been interested in for a very long time and after spending some time with a few with have fallen in love with their character and we both know they are challenging but we are definitely committed to training.

We will definitely be getting lots of input from professional trainers on a regular basis so hopefully that will keep some direction on both the dog and us 👍🏼

good luck and remember take your time with training, don't push to hard and make sure each stage of training is well grounded before moving onto the next.

A gundog training book may help you along the way.:good:
