Feather Edge boards

Recommended Posts

Can the above be attached to the fence rail by using staples using an electric nail gun? I was thinking that maybe I could put 2-3 through each board but not sure if they would be strong enough? The length of them are okay. I have nails ready to use but thought it would be quicker with staples.

Steve, whack 'em up quick with the staples and then go round and strengthen them with the nails.

To be honest, just after I posted the question, the above did come to mind.

Hello, I would think the force of a nail gun would split the board, by all means use the nails but with hand hammer, I use to take the edge off the nail points,

Taking the 'points' off nails is something I've always done. I can reduce the power of the nailgun accordingly. I'll practice on some old pieces first. I think though that I will end up just lightly applying staples to quickly hold the boards in place and then follow on with the nails.

As above ☝️☝️☝️

Use ring-shanked nails,,,, you're complicating things with both staples and nails. Plus, the standard of feather-edge pieces nowadays is quite poor, so the more you use to fix them, the more chance they're going to split.

One tip I was given that seems to work well is to tap the end of the nails with a hammer to take the edge off them, the wood does not seem to split so easy.  I tried it in similar situation and it worked pretty well.

This is something I have done for years. It does work well.
