steve_b_wales
Can the above be attached to the fence rail by using staples using an electric nail gun? I was thinking that maybe I could put 2-3 through each board but not sure if they would be strong enough? The length of them are okay. I have nails ready to use but thought it would be quicker with staples.
TIGHTCHOKE
Steve, whack 'em up quick with the staples and then go round and strengthen them with the nails.
oldypigeonpopper
Hello, I would think the force of a nail gun would split the board, by all means use the nails but with hand hammer, I use to take the edge off the nail points,

To be honest, just after I posted the question, the above did come to mind. I can reduce the power of the nailgun accordingly. I'll practice on some old pieces first. I think though that I will end up just lightly applying staples to quickly hold the boards in place and then follow on with the nails. peejay
use ringed nails or you will be picking them off the floor next summer
JKD
As above ☝️☝️☝️ Use ring-shanked nails,,,, you're complicating things with both staples and nails. Plus, the standard of feather-edge pieces nowadays is quite poor, so the more you use to fix them, the more chance they're going to split. Learnt the hard way and ended up drilling before fixing and as I had drilled I used screws.
powler
One tip I was given that seems to work well is to tap the end of the nails with a hammer to take the edge off them, the wood does not seem to split so easy. I tried it in similar situation and it worked pretty well.
