Question about a vintage cartridge bag

I bought a random selection of shooting gear at auction and this gem of a cartridge bag was amongst it.    It's a little worn, but intact and a testament to the maker- anyone know who that is?    My curiosity was drawn to the leather patch which seems original, not a repair on the lower right side of the front....whats that for then? Doesn't seem like a repair and can't think why it would be needed to protect against wear at that particular point?

Looks to me to be original stitching. Probably originally carried a motif.
