Blackbart
Not a good idea to put your phone number on a forum mate What would you use an american bulldog for?
russuk
What sort of hunting do you use these for? From my limited knowledge I recall ABs being used as pig dogs on the ranches to catch escaped pigs. Would be interesting to hear of any examples of them being used in a shooting situation in the UK. Paul in North Lincs.
An amercian bulldog has the brain the size of peanut.............the agiltiy of disabled breakdance..............the stealth of a 4 tonne dumper truck....................and the mouth of a hydraulic jack......... I have nothing against these dogs but in my eyes theyare certainly no good for any type of working life....not in this country anyway..... As someone mentioned they would probably be good guard dogs............................or look good on some Chavs arm....making him 'look nails'....... newboy
i hate to say it but it depends on how much time you put in with the dog and how young it was when you started working it,and also what lines it has come from. Just my opinion...........but I have never seen anyone using a ABG as a peg dog..........the only time I've seen them used is as a mushers dog at the end of dig. I fully appreciate that you are going to defend your beloved ABD's and thats fine..................but passing them of as working bushers & retrievers..........................come on   good luck shifting them though........................ Highlander
The question...why would anyone want one of those dogs for shooting? Dogs have been bred over many years for specific purposes and Bulldogs have not been bred as working gun dogs!
al4x
I'm not such a sceptic as a few of the others but I'd love to see pics of your ABD retrieving pheasants

Dogs have been bred over many years for specific purposes and Bulldogs have not been bred as working gun dogs! Neither have rottweilers but I have seen a good working one retrieving without turning the bird into mince meat. As has been said you could train a camel but the question is would you want to? Good luck new boy with the dispersal of the litter LB
Cranfield
There is a chap in Margate advertising in the Kentish Express this week, American Bulldog pups - £800 each.
Dirty Harry
This is the only experience of American Buldogs that I have... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/glouces...ire/6305877.stm It almost completley took the blokes hand off at the wrist. It took 4 shots is 00buck to kill it. I know thay are not all going to be like that but I think I would rather have a dog bread for hunting than try an American Bulldog and have to struggle with it. gdunc
I read of a Doberman in America which was apparently a particularly skilled 'bird dog' but as LB says - why bother, people have spent hundreds of years developing spaniels and labs for these jobs. As for working there's hardly likely to be any AB field trials. I'd stick to selling them as pets which is their more likely position in life. Good luck anyway

With regards the ISBT that has now gone by the way side....I did abit of homework, and something just didnt feel right. I understand now that there are alot of pit 'varieties' in the UK that have come across the the water on Irish papers, that regardless of papers can still be conficasted and destroyed under the dangerous dogs act. This was where my reservations came from. I'll stick to my lurchers I think!
