Doormat Posted June 15 Report Share Posted June 15 Hi Joined a few days ago Retrieved my old BSA Stutzen Mk1 Tap loader 177 from the loft which has laid dormant for over 3 decades !! it came out 2yrs ago very briefly (1 day) before being put back. absolutely stunning gun. I have 2 other rifles HW97K in black synthetic stock and Milbro Tracker that I bought off a work colleague the Milbro was way too long so chopped 6” off the barrel and a 1” off the stock. Now all 3 rifles are of similar size. The 97 is by far my most accurate, the Milbro is great to handle - especially after I routed a finger groove into the stock!! Doormat Posted June 21 Author Report Share Posted June 21 (edited) It didn’t fit!!…..arrgh 😫 had to carefully, (very carefully 😬) file the dovetail on the new rear sight. Kept passing the diamond file through until it was a tight fit, added some light oil and tightened the fixing screw. At last, after over 30yrs my Stutzen is finally fitted with open sights. Got to be 10 years or so ago. Good looking gun but rubbish accuracy, so I moved it on. BSA missed a trick not properly finishing their guns properly. Yep, that was one of mine, stunning to look at but frustrating to shoot. I feel the same about all the BSA last ditch attempts at making a rifle to compete with the German makers - Mercury S and Challenger as well as the Airsporter S, none of which delivered anything but exclusivity I'm afraid. I went half way round the country to get one a few years back, but for all it promised it was not as accurate as my Original 35 and the much promoted Walnut stock was so featureless that you could nod off just looking at it, really glad that you love yours but not for me I'm afraid. Throughout his life he’d lusted and imagined what it would be like. The star car of the canonball run film. A school boy poster as iconic as the tennis girl. The reality was a huge letdown. The BSA Stutzen is the same. Stunningly beautiful….. If I want accuracy I’ll pick my HW97, if it breaks, no biggie, just order another. Same can’t be said for a BSA Stutzen, especially the MK1 177 tap loader (mine 😎). She works, she’s intact and she’s not for sale. Over the last 3 decades while the gun has laid dormant in the loft, I often wondered if I should cash it in, problem is other things that I did cash in from that era are now extremely difficult to find, let alone convince the owner to part with, plus their value has rocketed compared to what I sold for 😔 What’s a Stutzen worth…£400, £500, £800?? Luckily I don’t need to sell her, if I did, I have plenty of other items that are of similar value that I could sell but more importantly could also be easily replaced later. The Stutzen will never go in my lifetime, maybe my son will cash in tho? 😂 Edit : Trying to think back what I paid back then… it was in the classified section of our local paper, or it might have been AdMag??
