Rail cards

We got a "two together" card which has paid for its self several times over.  We used it to go to London and then out to green park and up to the O2 and then back to London Bridge and back to Staplehurst. it can be used on the underground and Busses also ..I think.  We used it to go from Hastings to Gatwick and rtn and we will be able to use it again when we go to Gatwick and back again.  The only downside potentially is that the two together card states that we both have to travel together so one of us can't use it on our own.  Another thing is that we had to have id photos of both of us which meant using the pay photo both at the station where we got it because we didn't have photos on us.  read up on which card would suit your needs and the photo requirement aspect. obviously the more you use it the more you save.

Down here in the affluent south east you can’t use them before 10am. So that cuts your options. It means I have to pay full fare if I want to go and watch the cricket!

I think that we chose an early afternoon flight time and matched it with a train. it worked out well. It all depends on what you want it for.

We have the network rail card, and it has paid for itself in only a few journeys. It just annoys me that I cannot use it before 10. I will qualify for the senior rail card in a fortnight and then can officially be a grumpy old man.

Depend on how you use it.

I bought one some years ago (before Covid).  The first time I used it was to London, which worked OK, but I couldn't include a 'through' London Transport ticket because the 'link' into London Transport had to be activated at a London Transport ticket office - i.e. in London when I arrived.  On arrival in Paddington the train was late, so couldn't go to the LT ticket office then as I was in a hurry to get to my meeting.  On the way back at Paddington, I went to an LT counter to get it activated - but they couldn't do it at that counter, and the office that could do it was (a) elsewhere, and (b) closed at 17:00.  It was already later than that.

Then came Covid and I never used it again as meetings went on line.  I actually paid more than I saved.  I have never bought another as I just don't do enough rail journeys.

If I travelled by rail regularly, I would have one, but I don't travel by rail most years.  Good luck trying to link it to LT if you go to London, as that seems to have been made as difficult as possible.

I use mine all the time. It saves me a lot of money but you have to make enough journeys to justify the initial cost

Also, searching on the Trainline app for the best day and time to travel can make a huge saving because fares vary so much day to day

You can pay (say) fifty odd quid for a seat on the ten o'clock train and the next train an hour later the same seat will cost you ten or fifteen quid less

If you travel on SNCF in France, their senior cards, bought online, easily pay for themselves in one trip.

We used the TGV to the Côte d'Azur last year and the year before and had some serious savings by using the card and booking early online.
