NorfolkBoy
Barclay Customers beware - especially if you have a dormant account. I decided to check on my rarely used UK Barclays account via internet banking and found that some scrote has been fraudulently using my Connect card number to the tune of 1800 quid over the last 10 days. I've just spent an hour on the phone with Barclays trying to straighten this out - the whole thing only made slightly easier by being able to talk to someone in England and not downtown Bangalore. No doubt I'll get the money back in due course but I thought it only right to share the grief!

NorfolkBoy
Do you know how it happened ? It would appear that my debit card details ended up in the wrong hands - odd thing is that I haven't used the card at all in the last year since my last trip back to UK. The thief made three smallish charges and then made two big payments to Mortgage Express - whoever that might be.
Mungler
My one with Goldfish is still going on - they did £11,000 in one go (amongst other spend ups) at a Hifi / Electrical shop in Tottenham Court Road. If you don't get what you want then report them to the financial services Ombudsman (may not apply to you though as you are not resident in the UK)
Keith
Unfortunately this happens all the time now. In the summer my son, paralysed after a rugby accident, had some b****** steal his cheque book in the post. The account is the one from which he pays for his live-in assistants who give him some independence. £4,000 was chashed in cheques without a cheque card and with a signature that bore no resemblance to his. Nat West told us that they only check about 1 in 10 cheques for the right sig etc. They agreed to block the account, but 7 days later they cashed another cheque, this one for £2,000, from the stolen book and with the corner torn off so you couldn't see the number of the cheque. Whoever cashed it broke every rule in the banking book. Tom got the money back in the end but had to open a completely new account as the bank wouldn't guarantee that they wouldn't cash any more of the stolen cheques. The Old Bill said they wouldn't even bother to investigate as they didn't have the manpower. Tom and I spent ages working out what we'd do to the person who stole his cheque book - many of the ideas appear on the Abu Hamza thread! Highlander
Penny to a pound it'll involve people working for the bank/s. Especially if their (the banks) security checks are as good as the Home Office's. Nowadays Ol' Bill don't even bother with this kind of fraud it's all left to the banks and their 'security' staff. Nobody knows what's going on or what the outcome is we (the customers) just end up paying ever higher charges to help the poor old banks recoup some of their losses! I heard a spokes person (a bloke actually but we must be seen to be PC about this ) yesterday comment on Barclays suposed 1.3 BILLION losses on the sub prime markets and say it was a mere drop in the ocean compared to their 7.5 BILLION profit last/this year, so not too much of a problem! Who're the mugs here???

NorfolkBoy
Update: 5 weeks and umpteen calls to downtown Bangalore later I've got my cash back - What a joke Barclays service has become, calls not returned and personnel who have trouble talking to you 'off script'. 5 weeks to investigate my case or 5 weeks for it to come to the top of the pile - Hmmmm? I just feel sorry for anyone behind me in their queue who needs their cash for Christmas :yp: I couldn't be bothered to ask who or what had transpired re. the theft. This whole affair was so tedious that I will be closing my Barclays A/C next week when I'm back in UK. Anybody recommend a bank?
Bagsy
I think you'll find they're all much of a muchness now. I've been done before (Halifax) and had the same problem. A lot of people must be making an awful lot of money as neither the banks nor the police seem to have the time or the desire to investigate this type of fraud. Highlander
Like all BIG instuitutions these days they claim ‘customer service’ is their driving force...like hell it is! :yp: I wrote to Barclays over 7 weeks ago and still no reply. I called them and the person on the other end of the phone claims I wasn’t even on their client list??? Manager rings back to apologise (no explanation) and promises to send me stuff to enable Internet banking...still waiting. Also bank with Coutts, NatWest and HSBC but they’re all the same so NO I wouldn’t recommend one. Problem is nobody can offer me/us a way of working without using a bank; damn monopolies

Wookie
Numbered Swiss account? Actually, my Guernsey HSBC account is pretty good for customer service. Something to consider?
al4x
As said they are all much of a muchness. I'd actually chuck a vote in for Barclays as they have been pretty good to me and if you ever need a large mortgage in the UK there are ways and means of rigging their lending criteria :yp: though it is one of the things where a history with them gets you treated differently to a new customer
Cranfield
I bank with Nationwide and so far have had no problems, but if/when I do, I will be moving to an Internet bank like First Direct, Smile or one of the others. According to friends of mine that have accounts with Internet banks, they say that their customer service is 24/7 and excellent.

paul65
I have an account with Egg. There was a fraud on my credit card - several transactions totalling up to a couple of grand - and Egg handled it extremely well, at minimal inconvenience to me. Guest The Outlaw
We bank with First Direct and can only report excellent customer service and helpfulness. 12 years of happy banking, I only wish they did business banking. I recommend them to everyone. HSBC are pretty good for my business stuff, it helps when the branch has a steady staff, not changing all the time. First name terms with my branch staff. Tony I'll look into First Direct. I still use my UK Capital One credit card and their security is excellent. They will call me over here on my mobile if I use the card to establish its me using it and not a fraudulent transaction, very reassuring. An English English speaker as well:good: . WeihrauchPower
At least it's not just me then! I received a statement for a Capital One credit card (that i haven't used for over a year) to find it had been used for online gambling to a sum of £260! I never used the card as you can't pay it online so it's basically useless as no bank will handle the payments without charging either. To make things better i was accused of lying as the fraudsters normally take the card to it's limit, i'm sure they would of if i hadn't noticed, or they'd been a bit quicker. Whoever had my details obviously didn't know what they were doing. The phone calls to the U.K from here have cost a fortune and it'll be 8-10 weeks before it is sorted. :yp:

Poacher
Before the advent of chip and pin I had a new card sent out to me (which was intercepted courtesy of some lovely person at the royal mail) and got fleeced £1200. After reporting it to the cops and recieving/filling out a crime reference do dah the bank set me up a temporary account whilst they sorted the problem and refunded it all + the girl in the bank was a babe. that was HSBC
