ph5172
I have genuinely spoken with leatherman HQ in the US They have stated it’s a mail notch to assist in opening. if you wish to contact them to double check it’s up to you.

JKD
Right,,,, I've done a Google search for images of "Leatherman tools from 1983". This image shows a similar tool to ditch's, but with NO NOTCH, just a slight depression beneath, but in the same position. So,,,, have they been machined out by the original owner for a specific purpose ? 🤔 🤷♂️ Edited September 28 by JKD

My old one (UK import, made in Japan) was made apparently between 1985 and 1989.

AFAIK, everything on an early Leatherman would have had a purpose, so,,,, ? 🤷♂️ I have highlighted that one notch has some wear to it,,,, the other one doesn't. Must be a reason, and hence a purpose for the notches ? Anyway,,,, I've used up my daily quota of replies, so it's goodb,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Only kidding 😆😂🤣

Great ideas come from things falling from apple trees. Newton invented gravity after an apple fell on him (presumably) from an apple tree - just imagine what he could have invented had a whole branch dropped on him!
