I have genuinely spoken with leatherman HQ in the US

They have stated it’s a mail notch to assist in opening.

if you wish to contact them to double check it’s up to you.

What,,,, to tear of the wax seal ?! 😳😆🤣

Right,,,, I've done a Google search for images of "Leatherman tools from 1983".

This image shows a similar tool to ditch's, but with NO NOTCH, just a slight depression beneath, but in the same position. So,,,, have they been machined out by the original owner for a specific purpose ? 🤔 🤷‍♂️

Are you suggesting Lord Ditch of Narfolk has second hand toolage?

🤷‍♂️ I've asked him how old they are,,,, no answer, but back in 1983 ish, he may have bought/acquired them in a partly used condition 🤦‍♂️😆🤣

They only started production in 1983.  My old one (UK import, made in Japan) was made apparently between 1985 and 1989.

Yup, that's what I found 👍 Started before then, but morphed/evolved into Leatherman in 1983. AFAIK, everything on an early Leatherman would have had a purpose, so,,,, ? 🤷‍♂️

I have highlighted that one notch has some wear to it,,,, the other one doesn't. Must be a reason, and hence a purpose for the notches ? Anyway,,,, I've used up my daily quota of replies, so it's goodb,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Only kidding 😆😂🤣

It's NOT raining here, I've not long got in from shooting at Grimsthorpe.

Why are you lot indoors?

Mine was an original bought in the USA.

When I find it I will see what "notches" it has.

I've been outdoors cutting up a branch that fell from an apple tree.

Great ideas come from things falling from apple trees.  Newton invented gravity after an apple fell on him (presumably) from an apple tree - just imagine what he could have invented had a whole branch dropped on him!

this is the tool in question......i believe it is a 300 model not the 200 model which is slightly smaller...it has the electrical crimper

i did have the leather pouch for it ...but it lasted only 1 day ...as the dog gnawed it....
