Try deleting the app and then download it again. Might work, but never had this problem with a banking app, but did work with some other apps.

Just tried that and it works. Different than before so not sure why didn’t update previously 👍🏻

I was unable to pay in a cheque for a time yesterday (Saturday).  App worked OK, photographed a (printed business type, low value) cheque, accepted photos and then simply said it couldn't deposit cheque now, please try later or visit your branch (which is miles away and would have been closed).  Worked on 3rd attempt about an hour later (I think, proof will be when the money shows which I guess will not be until Monday).

There are fairly frequent updates via the Apple App Store.

John,

I wasn`t aware that you could pay a cheque in on line. When I have a cheque to pay in (very rare now) I go to the local branch and pay in by machine, so clearly there`s a better way without a bank visit.

Being a Luddite, could you please elucidate.

Many thanks,

OB

This relates to the Nat West app on the phone (I know Lloyds have something similar).  Not all banks offer it (Chase doesn't as far as I know).

  1. Log in on the banking app.
  2. Choose 'deposit cheque'.  Place cheque initially face up on a flat surface with good light and a plain background.
  3. Follow instructions - which means photographing (it does it semi automatically showing you when it is how it wants it to be framed) the front and rear (even if blank) of the cheque.  You need a flat surface with good light and a plain background - like a windowsill.

Note that there are some maximum limits.  I know the max on one cheque is £1000, but there is also a daily or weekly limit and not sure what they are.  My cheque (sadly) was way under all of the limits.

It is quite easy.  I think the funds are available after about 2 or 3 days - NOT immediately.

I`m with Lloyds, so I`ll try it if and when I get a cheque,

Kind regards,

I know Lloyds do the same service as various of my family bank at Lloyds, but not sure of the details - but must be much the same.  The Nat West is very easy and takes you through how to do it.

Lloyds do exactly the same.

I haven't physically paid a cheque in for years  - when I rarely get them.

I paid a cheque in at the branch a month ago which was the first one that I’d received and paid in for probably two years, so quite a rarity but still good to know that it can be done from home👍

If you receive 'wayleaves', they only pay by cheque (or that was the case when I asked about 12 months ago).

Wayleave (for those who may not know) is a small payment to reimburse you for having an an item, usually infrastructure related, on your property - something like an electricity pole, pylon, sub station, stay even on your land.  I have a few poles and they pay me around £20 twice a year - by cheque.

My local town used to have 'all' the banks: Lloyds, Nat West, Barclays, Midland, TSB, CoOP, and earlier Martins and Williams Deacons (Glynns) as well - and several Building Societies, C&G, Nationwide, Halifax, The Woolwich, Birmingham Midshires, Bradford and Bingley (I think).

Now, as far as I know there are only Lloyds and Nationwide.  Therefore each has FAR more customers.  I was a Lloyds customer back in the 'old days' and there were (up to demand dependent) 6 cashier windows and two enquiries windows, 4 cashpoint machines and 1 creditpoint slot.  If there were more than 2 people in a queue, another cashier was brought on line unless all were already in operation.  Generally a visit took maybe 4 or 5 minutes.  I used to visit in my lunch half hour easily.

Now there are only 2 cashiers and an enquiries desk, still 4 cashpoints and 1 pay in machine (which is less functional than the old creditpoint).  When the queuing is such that there is no room, the enquiries desk asks everyone to use the machines if possible.  A visit often takes 20 mins - half an hour as ALL the shopkeepers use it for their change etc.
