The handles are purposely made different shapes and profiles. The olive wood gave off a beautiful olive aroma whilst turning but proved quite difficult to get a smooth finish on them. I`ve been thinking how to present the knives and the only solution that I`ve come up with so far are velvet purse type thingies (as photo). I may well think of some sort of wooden rack to house them. Got a bit of time to think between now and Xmas. No doubt Shambam1961 could suggest something so I`m, open to any suggest in that regard. Old Boggy Posted November 18 Author Report Share Posted November 18 After Shambam`s beautiful bottle stopper stand, my attempt at a stand for the cheese knives looks positively amateurish, but hopefully will be reasonably well received by family members at Christmas and just about fit for purpose. This is the first attempt of the simplest stand that I can come up with using my limited woodworking skills and equipment. The first photo shows the method of temporary attachment of the knives to the sloping stand using round magnets before the first coat of finish has been applied. I did find that using two magnets, one on top of the other increased the magnetism and held the knives more securely. Quite why that is, is beyond me, but I recall when visiting Ditchie a few years ago, he was playing with some earth magnets in his shed, so perhaps he can explain that one. My knowledge of physics in that area is pretty limited. The other photos are of the knives in position held by the magnets with further work necessary to finish the stand off, plus a coat off olive oil to the board to bring out the grain more. I decided not to attach the stands to the boards as I think that would make storage after use a little more difficult for the recipients. This is the first of 4 boards and knife sets that I`m part the way through so a bit more work still to do, plus final finishing. OB Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Old Boggy Posted yesterday at 10:33 Author Report Share Posted yesterday at 10:33 (edited) Well, I`m almost there, but as TC said, I`m cutting it fine to get all four finished. Anyway, having seen Shambam`s bottle stopper stand that he made for his daughter, I have pinched his idea somewhat and come up with hopefully a better idea than my original one with the magnets. I started by cutting the slots to take the blades well into and across the holes if that made sense which made it easy to slot each blade in and put it into the hole. However, I was concerned that this might weaken the top a bit and might in time with a bit of abuse crack along the grain. This was on the first one which was the guinea pig for all my mistakes along the way which were many I can assure you. So I just cut the slots as can be seen just up to the holes. This then gave me the problem that the blades with their profile wouldn`t allow the blades to enter the holes, especially the wide bladed one. Easier demonstrated that explained. What I then had to do was cut the underside so that the blades could be slid in and down into the holes, if that makes sense. This I did eventually with a Dremel as can hopefully be seen in the last photo. I have used self tapping inserts as originally kindly suggested for other projects By Kevin which I`ve found invaluable and which allow all the bits to screw together easily. They will finally be glued as well. I may also give the original stands with the magnets to accompany the sets as the circular stands could be used for final storage whilst the magnet stands used on the boards. The last thing to do is to finalise the other three stands (almost there) and give all bits a final polish with Chestnut Friction Polish. Another recommendation by Kevin. I must admit this has taken me far longer than envisaged and has certainly taxed my little brain, but I am now reasonably pleased with them.
