Mice! Posted Monday at 13:05 Report Share Posted Monday at 13:05 Well I had a little accident last month, I'd just shot a squirrel in the garden and straight away the magpies were in for a look, usually the R10 is locked away at home but that was the rifle that was handy, I put the gun down on a kitchen stool, those of a nervous disposition shouldn't read any further!! I looked at how I'd positioned the rifle, thought it'll be fine there's only me in the house and turned to make a brew 🤦🤦 Bang HISS, the gun was on the hard wooden floor, first time I've ever dropped, well let a gun drop in my life, I didn't cry, but I was gutted. Took apart what I could hoping something had just come lose, reassembled but she wouldn't fill, so away it went. I've had stuff on so just not hot around to changing the seals and hoping that's it 😳 otherwise I'll send her off to get sorted in the new year. In the meantime I've been shooting my .22 Rapid, I've really missed there being no sling, and I've missed a few squirrels getting the range wrong, shots I'd take every time with .177 I've still had some cracking sessions with the .22 but I was just thinking I needed another .177 as a back up gun for stalking. Chance came up to sell the FWB 300SU, so I took it and started looking at options while trying to keep the budget reasonable, at least to me. I looked at a good few, the budget started to creep, Daystate Revere, Daystate MK4, AA Ultimate Sporter, AA 510 all very nice guns, but all probably £2-300 more than I'd planned on spending. I've always fancied a Scorpion, I like BSA, nothing new there, same mag and bolt loading, BSA don't for some reason hold there money like other brands, but for a buyer that's a good thing. Then it was recommended I look at the Goldstar, it's essentially a Scorpion, but it's regged, so at least 70 shots, stocks are adjustable and very nice, essentially a lighter R10 so sounds ideal. But then you have to find one! One was found, nice Black Pepper stock, 3 mags at a shop 2hrs away 🙄🙄 I didn't want to buy unseen, decided I'd have yo wait till the Monday before I could drive down and look it over. Kept looking through the week and another three popped up, couldn't believe it, plus a fair few Scorpions and Ultras, a few not too far away as well, typical. But I'd had my head turned by the Goldstar, watched reviews and read the threads I could find. Then a Walnut rifle popped up, the pictures I'd seen, reviews I'd read and videos all said the Walnut was a bit bland, looked almost like Beech, well my new rifle certainly isn't bland 😅😅 Couple of pictures taken at home Friday night, not the best light for pictures but the gun looks very nice. I took the stock off Saturday afternoon to look her over and the metal work is spotless. I should have taken a few more pics, but folk arrived earlier than I'd expected so I put things back together and locked away. Saturday morning there was some actual sunlight coming in so I took a few pics of the other side of the rifle. I know the Walnut makes no difference to how a gun shoots, but wow does it make a difference to how the gun looks, stunning piece of wood. I'd had to do a RFD transfer because the lad selling didn't want to post, so it added to the price but I couldn't be happier with what I got, the shop were seriously impressed as well 😁😁 Shockingly we've been busy all weekend so I couldn't do anything with the rifle, well I snatched half an hour this morning, popped the scope on, adjusted the cheek piece, but the CCL Mod off the R10 on and took 6 shots, I wanted to see how the trigger felt and how loud she was, 3 shots moving the zero, then 3 at the bull, the target blew away twice as I'd just wrapped it around a piece of wood, it's very gusty out today but I needed to see. Shot kneeling from the kitchen off a stool at about 15mtrs I'll take that for a start, very nice indeed, trigger was nice and light, gun was quiet. And I know that once I get sat down that group will tighten right up 😁😁 How different a gun looks with a scope and Mod on. hopefully the wind drops tomorrow, I'll need to put sling studs on or see if I can get something that fixes to the aluminium?? Possibly look at a shroud in the future to get the length down and see if it can be any quieter. I'd said I wouldn't buy unseen again but took the chance and so far the rifle is spot on. Anyone would think it's Xmas 😅😅

Ultrastu Posted Monday at 17:58 Report Share Posted Monday at 17:58 Now that has turned my head .what a lovley gun .I've a real soft spot for a scorpion .and a gold star is even better especially in walnut . I'm sure that will shoot well . My se did around 65 shots when it was sub 12 .so a regged goldie should do 90 ish .filling to 250 bar and down to around 130 . My peak energy was around 190 bar un regged . Keep us updated on it mice I'd love to read more . Thanks.

Cheers Stu, I was liking the look of the Black Pepper, but for me this was just wow, didn't even try and haggle because I knew I wanted it. Loads of adjustment to get things just right which I'm sure I'll tweak as I go, the adjustable cheek piece makes up for the gun being Ambi, and the gorgeous wood 😍 Forgot to say its had a Huma reg put in from new, the guy said he didn't trust the BSA reg, so that was another bonus from my point of view. This says max fill of 232, my R10 is the same but I only normally go to around 200-210, if I'm getting near 90 I'll be really happy as that's a good few weeks worth of shooting. I'll update as I go as I didn't find too much on them from normal folk 👍

I suppose you have the usual pellets to try .mine still loves the jsb 4.53 8.4s with heavies being a close second .

Oh I've got pellets 😆😆 part of the reason for looking at the Scorpion then Goldstar was hopefully it'll be the same pellet with the same mags for both rifles so no mix ups. For me it's still heavies are number 1, but 8.4s are possibly more accurate although I've never seen any 4.53s yet, I thought they were a myth. Longbower Posted Monday at 23:18 Report Share Posted Monday at 23:18 I have two Scorpions , .22 FAC Beech and .177 Tactical ,both regulated (Huma) . I can't fault the accuracy , or the practicality of them . The .177 has a longer air tube fitted . Squirrels hate them both . Enjoy your BSA mate , it's a gun for life . Mice! Posted Tuesday at 14:47 Author Report Share Posted Tuesday at 14:47 Well I've done some shooting at last, bit blowy out not bad. Set up at twenty meters and put 60 shots through her, JSB Heavies, Exacts and Barracuda Match, few scope tweaks and getting caught out by the trigger, it's very sensitive. I was surprised to find that filling to 220 ish, 60 shots dropped the pressure to around 100, I've been told the reg is set to 95, but I'd have expected quite a few more shots. Knowing I've got 60 will do for now though, the bolt is silky smooth as well. Refilled the rifle and had a brew then started again shooting 20, 25 & 30mtrs. I tweaked again off the target at 25mtrs to get the vertical bob on as that's what I'm normally set at, I wasn't planning on sticking with the Barra Match, but I have for now, I didn't have time to do another 30-40 shots with Heavies and the results are decent so I'll use the pellets I got and see how they go. Shots that are off are me with the trigger, settling on target and PFFT 😳😳 Few things to tweak but it'll do for now, packed up, loaded the mags and put the rifle in the bag 😮😮 Well it's longer than the R10 is 🤣🤣 luckily I've got the next size up bag as well 😄😄 Let's hope it's not raining Saturday because I'll be going out 😁😁
Ultrastu Posted Tuesday at 15:29 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 15:29 So my scorp when sub 12 un regged .would do 240 - 130 bar for 65 shots . I wouldn't be afraid to fill her up more than 220 to get more shots .your always going to get more shots per fill in the top half than the bottom half .if that makes sense .if your total bar range was 100 bar of fill from 100 - 200 bar for say 60 shots .if you counted you would get 35 shotd shooting from 200 bar down to 150bar .and 25 shots from 150 down to 100 bar for your total of 60 shots . bruno22rf Posted Tuesday at 18:04 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 18:04 Talking to Robert Lane a while back and he was saying that a Reg will not give you any more shots per fill but rather even out the power curve so give you more usable shots - but total shot count will be the same as standard un regged guns. Cheers mate, definitely more usable shots, as unregged over 200bar and the fps can drop till you get to the sweat spot, I see the reg as removing the sweat spot and not wasting air 👍 19 hours ago, Longbower said: 177 has a longer air tube fitted .
