Mungler
I want to take more photos this coming year - I can see that photos really do make a post come alive for everyone. However, I have never really got into or bothered with cameras in the slightest. I have an old Nikon Coolpix for ebay stuff - it's about 5 years + old now and the thing drives me mad - it is so slow - press the button to take a photo and you can be waiting anywhere between 5 seconds and 12 seconds for thing to pull it's finger out and take the picture. So, I want a small light weight digitial camera (something that could hang round the neck would be ideal - I am not afraid of looking like a teenage Japanese tourist if need be). The camera must obviously be able to take a decent photo (plenty mega pixels) and be quick - an instant picture. Something cheap as well please so that if I lose it or break it I won't cry. What's the recommendations? We are talking as far below £100 as is humanly possible. Cheers ears, Andy P.S. If anyone has anything out there they want rid of then let me know - I would guess post Xmas is as good a time as any to ask.
tulkyuk
Andy Fuji do some really good cheap Camera's - take at look in Asda, they normally sell them quite cheap
Dunkield
£100 may be sticking point, but if you buy recently obsolete or superceded you may get lucky, and in a lot of cases the one that has just been discontinued is better than it's repalcement. The quality of the lens are more important than lots of pixels. Look at the Casio Exilims (sorry Nick) very thin and not bad at all, and Fuji as suggested. Panasonic do some reasonable stuff as well, and Canon, but they may be outside your budget. I am looking for a new one at the mo' so I have a What Camera at home I will see what recommend for low end stuff tonight.
sidibear
Sony Cybershot, good pics and dead easy to use
Mungler
Do the Casio or the Cybershot have any "delay" between pressing the button and the picture being taken. Come to think about it, is there a technical term for this and anywhere I can check this out by reference to the product specification? The Casio looks like good value - all the toys and docking station for sub £
Dunkield
All digital camera's have lag some less than others, makes it difficult to take action shots, one of the review sites states the delay in ms's. You can get good results with a bit of lead though He was on the mat when I pressed the button on this one (and yes I know the fence needs attention)
Piebob
A few years back a bought a factory refurb Fuji from Morgan's as a knock about / hide camera - they still have refurb options which won't break the bank and I think they have a 3 month warranty. Looky here - http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/
tulkyuk
I used to have this one - http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/deta...bCategoryID=218 as a knock about and its crcking for taking in the hide or out with the rifle
henry d
Jessop`s also do re-furbished cameras and they also haggle
pin
It's not normal for seconds worth of delay, no cameras are that bad. I'd wager it's taking the time to autofocus then shoot. Try depressing the shutter half way first, whilst pointing at what you want to shoot. When you are happy with the composition then press all the way down and it should be instant. fortune
I recon that if you go into the menu options on your existing camera and have a look at how it is set up, you will probably find that it is set up for auto focus or auto assist beam. What these do is to automate the picture taking but take time to analyse what it is that the camera is seeing. It’s worth having a look at these settings. dunganick
In that price range i would probably look at olympus, they do some £100ish camera's decent glass in them, well put together and they more importantly use rechargeable lithium batteries not AA's If you willing to strech to about £135 hands down the canon ixus 70 is the camera to go for. To be honest most camera's under £100 are only good as paper weights.
grasshopper
You could always get 1 of these to carry the camera in.. http://www.bushwear.co.uk/ProductDetails.a...product_id=7931 I use 1 when out,you dont even know it,s there and the pockets zip,so you shouldn,t lose anything. If you shop around you,ll find them cheaper than this. GH
Hardy
For the best info on cameras look them up on DPReview. I've used a few Fuji models in the past which have been very good - bought the missus a small 5mp fuji from Morgan's (used to be one just outside the office - too tempting ) & its very good, alothough the lag is quite bad. That being said I only paid £50ish for it. If you want something without lag your only real option is a DSLR which start around £375 for something worth having. One other thing to consider - the picture quality on a lot of mobile phones these days is very good, upto around the 5mp level, although you may need to change the settings to get the best quality. Dunkield
OK Mung, got the mag here now. For arround £100 they rate: Samsung S830 Panasonic LS60 Kodak V803 Nikon L12 After that you run of budget. I would up it a bit and look at: Ixus 70 Nikon S500 Panasonic FX30
Big_Sam
The main problem with most compact digital cameras is the time they take to autofocus. Also if it starts charging the flash it will slow it too. With your budget you will not be able to go for a DSLR, but they do offer a lot for the money. My Canon 30D for example, cost me a few hundred 2nd hand, but what you do get is: Fast autofocus, usually under 0.5 second. Up to 1/8000s shutter speed to really freeze the action! 5 photos per second on burst mode. True 8.2MP resolution. With the focus locked you can fire off in around 20milliseconds when you press it, so you rarely miss something. And with Servo (continuous) focusing there is not need to wait for it to focus and you can fire away all day long! But it all comes at a ridulas cost, think Silverpigeon type cost
