Dogs, guns, decoys, waders the whole lot can go in the back if its closed in and lockable. Sounds like a good price with that mileage without seeing it although I have no idea what 'J reg' year is as over in N.Ireland we have different reg no.s They are some wagon if ya ask me or Top Gear for that matter. Rob G Posted July 28, 2004 Report Share Posted July 28, 2004 I had a 1984 hi-lux with 245,000 miles on the clock.The engine was sweet as a nut,had a bit of trouble with prop shaft,half shaft.Other than that it was ok.Check around the rear wheel arches they are prone to rot there it's a real water trap.I just picked up a vauxhall frontera swb on a m (94) £2300.Not every ones choice but i can take the roof panel out in seconds for lamping also use it as a every day car Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Views and comments much appricieated. hi sam. Check if it has had the head replaced recently, the reason I say this is my sons surf blew the head and he could not get a secondhand one anywhere. It ended up costing £1,280.00 for a new head(fitted). Since then three people I know one is a mechanic, have had the same problem. They have all paid between £1,280 to £1,560 to get them repaired. Apparently they overheat with no warning, then instantly blow the head. My mate John has kept his now that it has been repaired and we go shooting in it every week. (its a lovely motor). But the others have got shut. The chap who specialises in repairing them told us that a lot of them are Japanise imports as you know, and they never use antifreeze or such over there, so most of the problems start not long after they arrive here. Sorry to be a kill joy, but they have cost us all a lot of shooting time. If the head has been done over here your laughing! Hope I have not upset you. TOMMY. Landy's are God's 4x4, but the Hilux is the Terr's vehicle of choice and they are a fair bit more refined. Where are you going to find a J reg landy for that price? Wookie p.s. We had one on the National Trust and carrying rakes/ drags or anything with a long shaft was out of the question (or out of the window)! kdubya Posted July 29, 2004 Report Share Posted July 29, 2004 if its not an import? but a standard "british" spec hilux? you will not have head probs on the 2.4? in fact the engine is bullit proof and even if it is a "surf" not all 2.4s have head problems? its reckoned to be about 20% that fail? so that means 80% are ok the problem is not so much overheating? its a corrosion / water channel prob? ie head gasket goes or as a lot of not to clever importers do they change the coolant on arrival put in the antifreeze etc! but dont actually bleed the system properly!! it takes some doing? then when they belt down the motorway an air lock gets in the cylinder head and ooh dear one instantly cracked head, try this site it will answer every question you can ever ask? oh by the way as you may have guessed I have a 2.4 surf that gets thrashed to bits day in and day out and I would replace it in an instant should I have to cheers Keith http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/ Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
crowstopper Posted July 29, 2004 Report Share Posted July 29, 2004 Old Land rovers in what I have found are just as good, we have had a series 3 for around 20 years (second hand when we bought it, so around 30 years old) and it runs very well(It Is used to cart wood and to pick up on shoot days and is a general work car). Also found that Toyota hilux are light on the back end meaning they slip around when going over very ruff ground. I don’t know what the newer land rovers are like but the old ones are a great 4x4. I could not have duplicated the specification, on any other used 4x4, for anywhere near the same money. I know, because I tried. All sparea are easily obtainable (most are 4Runner spares), apart from body panels on certain models. Toyota will service them, if you want.
