LEFTY478
OK, so which members of the Essex Mafia haven't been around for a few days? >>Linky<< Four people were arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment after a man was escorted through a shopping centre with a sign around his neck saying "thief". Police said the men - aged 22, 41, 42 and 44 - were questioned following an incident in Witham, Essex, on Friday. A police spokeswoman said a 39-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of theft and all five were granted bail until 27 November. "Officers are investigating allegations against five Essex men," she said. When asked about the man being escorted through Witham with his hands bound and the cardboard sign around his neck, the police spokeswoman said she could not discuss details of the incident. Bagsy
Be interesting to know a bit more about this one, the Police aren't saying much........if they'd just frogmarched the block down the nick with the sign then what's the problem? Or have they locked him up and tortured him for a few days
LEFTY478
Must have been at least one non Essexer involved though. After all, who wrote the sign?
Andy_B
Just read this in the paper...think the fact they had bound his hands, constitutes "false imprisonment" they thought thet were performing a cit's arrest

Mungler
If it was true Essex then the sign would have said "Feef".
A Sick Old Man
Is " Feef " with two F's or FFFREE?

Wookie
Apparently the guy is planning on sueing the bloke and his mates, saying they beat him up a bit first. When he got to the cop shop, the old bill apparently told him that they would get worse than he would. He says he has also been shunned by people after the march through town which, to be honest, is about what he deserves if he is willing to swipe 800-odd notes off his boos. Personally, I think the police and courts should take this as a bit of a warning that they are no longer seen as a reliable provider of justice. Dr W
Apparently the guy is planning on sueing the bloke and his mates, saying they beat him up a bit first. When he got to the cop shop, the old bill apparently told him that they would get worse than he would. And that is what is wrong with this country! So a thief is caught and as in the old days paraded through the town so everyone knows and they are going to get a stiffer sentance than the criminal??? The political party that actually does something about the justice system in this country and gets us out of the worse piece of legislation ever created - the human rights legislation - will get my vote and I expect everyone elses. The worst thing Bliar every did (out of a long line of things) was signing us up to that piece of tosh which only really seems to benefit criminals. Sorry having a Daily Mail moment but this sort of thing really ****es me off. Edited October 2, 2008 by Dr W
J@mes
Just read this in the paper...think the fact they had bound his hands, constitutes "false imprisonment" they thought thet were performing a cit's arrest I am pretty sure you can only perform a citizens arrest for crimes which would be punishable by more than 5 years in prison, and are called indictable offences - there are set rules for what you can and cant do in a cit's arrest, in order to protect the general public from anyone who may have strange ideas about being some kind of supercitizen and doing it on a regular basis. tulkyuk
The thing is - If the guys who performed the 'citizens arrest' get a bigger or even equivelent punishment as that of the 'thief', then there will be public outrage (and rightly so!), but as usual nothing will be done about it by the courts, goverment or anyone else for that matter and that is what wrong with this country - every one can see it, but nothing gets done about and we all just roll over and accept it. Up the revolution i say
rabbithunter2008
If they only did citizens arrest, they would not be in so much hot water the had him tied up with a sign around his neck You're allowed to restrain them and you're allowed to use reasonable force, but the word "reasonable" is something that's used in British law in an awful lot of different statutes and it always causes problems because you have to look at what's reasonable in those circumstances. They should just called old bill and waited till they got there
Wookie
Granted, but people are getting so annoyed with the complete lack of punishment that goes with most crime, that the police cease to be a serious option for them. Classic case. I heard somewhere that now, if police find illegal immigrants, instead of arresting them, they just give them a letter telling them to go to Liverpool at some point. I have respect for the law, I have to, but there is something wrong with this country.
