GJUK
My local FEO just phoned and he's coming to see me on Monday! I'm picking up my cabinet this evening and now I need to find somewhere to mount it. I have been told over the phone that it can not be in sight from any window, which is a ****** as my house seems to be mostly glass... I can't put it in the loft as that has no easy access (ladder to get up there and no floor). The only idea im having it to buy a cheap ikea wardrobe and build it around the cabinet. :-/ Help! Thanks Jon
garyb
It dosent have to go in a wardrobe / cupboard. Mine against the wall of a spare bedroom - which dosent seen regular traffic from visitors. This was fine for both FAC and SGC
GJUK
Thanks for the reply. I was told over the phone it must not be in viewable line of the window or anyone breaking in and looting for example. Short of bricking up the window and putting a steel door in place of my wood one, I'm at a loss of where to put the damn thing. All the upstairs outside walls are not brick, as this wimpy built house quality is a bit hit and miss. So I can not put the cabinet next to the window (so you can't see it if you look in). My airing cupboard has my hot water tank in it and there is no room in there for this. Hmmm
Breastman
The cheap wardrobe is probs the solution for you then. Thats what i did with mine, just got a £100 flat-pack job and threw that up. Put some old carpet in there under the safe aswell to help deaden the noise when i'm putting things in/getting things out of it. Hope your visit goes well Mark
al4x
stupid question but can't you put it upstairs?

GJUK
Yeh I can put it upstairs, but it will be in view of people at the same level via the window.
garyb
Do you live underground ? hehe

Put it in the corner close to the window and have a cupboard next to it and you'll hardly see it then place something in front of it job done. Big_Sam
I'm always amazed at the fuss they make about hiding the cabinet. The fact that when I go shooting I leave the house dressed like a tree carrying several gun bags is usually a give away....
GJUK
I agree with it being a fuss but if its a requirement, I've got to meet it. Lol at being underground. I'll work something out I guess. :-/
Andy W
I can't put it in the loft as that has no easy access (ladder to get up there and no floor). I need a ladder to get to my loft and I boarded part of it out so I could crawl along and installed lighting, one question he may ask you is where do you intend to store the key for the safe, he asked me that and my answer was "I was going to ask you your advice on that one" he seemed to like that. paul1966
i wouldn't worry about the window if its upstairs as long as long as its out of view from casual visitors and fixed to a solid wall you should be fine.
Imperfection
Mine is in upstairs spare bedroom behind door bolted to external wall.In theory-the house 50yds opposite could perhaps see it through the window, but would also need binoculars.I guess if you lived in a bungalow it would be different matter, but i wouldnt worry too much. GJUK
Ho hum. Thanks all. I'm going to take the risk of mounting it for his visit and build it around one of these Hope he approves it there and then which might save me another few more weeks waiting time. Cheers. Steve'o
When I had my FEO visit I did not have a cabinet. When he rang to make the appointment told him did not have one as needed advice on location of it , which was not a problem. Had the visit discussed where to put it with him, was told then to get one and when he received my SGC, he would check the cabinet fixed to the wall and give me my SGC. My visit was in beginning of May 08 had my SGC end June 08 Cheers Steve
Newsportshooter
Do you not have an 'understairs' cupboard Failing that - You can get horizontal cabinates which can be bolted to the floor under a window for instance and therefore out of sight..... GJUK
I do have an 'understairs' area, its quite large but will not fit the 7 gun cabinet I've just bought there. This is far too tall. Cheers, J
