not assuming you use a filter, with a filter the 170 is great and with the HMR you can of course shoot well over 100 yards if you can see them

I inwardly groan when someone asks what lamp for "lamping" when you'd get much more relevant advice if you say more of what sort of "lamping" you do. You indicate that you shoot alone so avoided the advice about hand held lamps.

IF lamping from a car a nice big bulky large humongous - did I mention how big and heavy it is lamp would be great. Never mind if a filter is a wrap round one that lights up your face 'cos it'll shine for 300 yards so foxy or wabbit wont see your face but will still see the car anyway. :good:

You mentioned the smaller more compact ones that won't get in the way when slung on the shoulder for a walkabout. I think you've already found the ones to look at but want to know more about them?

The Mini or Maxi require that you suffer a wire from a battery pack that is belt or pocket bourne, which in itself is bulky as it needs to be large enough to provide power to a lamp that lights up a much larger area than you need to view. Almost everything ahead of you is illuminated within your field of view: Rather than confined to just a little wider than what you can see through your scope.

The Deben Atom Tactical lamp has a smaller wattage bulb unit with a much narrower beam width of 4 degrees. The lamp unit is recessed in "tunnels" to further narrow the beam to a point that few people or creatures are seen or alarmed by it. As a consequence it doesn't need as much power to light up the narrower field of view required by a hunter trying to be discreet on foot. Down point of this is that it's only good for about 100 yards with the latest batch of 12v 2.0AH NiMH packs that are made up as a flat pack to secure to the rifle butt in its elasicated pouch. A reasonably carefull lone hunter will rarely need to make a 100 yard shot for a bunny.

You can get a larger battery pack made up - I use a 13.2v 2.5AH pack that reaches further and lasts me up to a five hour walkabout if used sparingly with regard to the dimmer it is supplied with. A flip down filter is also available that can be sanded down to just a little smaller that the lamp body so it does not affect the vision of the user - nor light up his face.

Other problem is the cost, A huge £129 ish and another £30 ish for a custom made bigger nicad pack. Not cheap but if you do your thing alone on foot over a long time it's a cracker.

There are some LED torch lamps coming about. These are real compact and very light but the brightest of them are the ones with the highest amount of white light in the beam. They will also reach out to HMR ranges but the ultra white light results in a very quick scarper of the quarry. As LED's produce a very narrow spectrum of visible white there is very little red in it to pass through a red filter - you'll only get 40 yards or so if that is used.
