omegabri
Hi guys... Newbie here. I've been into air rifles/pistols now for some time......and I'm a member of a firearms club. I'm waiting for my Class 1 through the post (any day now !!!!) and wondered if the Hawke Sidewinder scope was OK for a .22 Sako Quad rifle ? (or will the action of the rifle ruin the settings everytime I fire it ?) - don't want to pay a fortune for a scope !! Cheers if any one knows !! seisobs
I have a Sako Quad LR Synthetic with a Leupold 3 X 9 X 40 scope, nice but £220. If you are going to Buy a quality rifle don't skimp on a cheapo scope!
omegabri
That's roughly the price of the sidewinder - although I think the cost might be the magnification as it's a 6-24x56 for around that price.....probably a lot more than I need anyway !!! ta.... steve_b_wales
There will be virtually no recoil in a .22, especially if you use a moderator. The scope should be okay, but, buy the best you can afford. Steve
omegabri
Thanks Steve...... Now looking at the Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x50 IR Rifle Scope (about 550 quid...) Bri.. (please say they're good !!!! can't afford more !!! ha ha)
Dave-G
10x may be a bit marginal if you ever get a HMR or WMR barrel for it mate - especially if you lay up and snipe a bit with it. But keep looking at sidewheel parallax scopes (well just avoid front adjust - 'cos the Luepy dont seem to have any) for the Quad as they will be shorter which allows you to change barrels without moving the scope provided you use high enough mounts to leave a decent gap between the barrel and objective lens bell. omegabri
Top one Dave....Good thinking ! I'm kinda going Hawke sidewinder way again at the mo, plus it's a 6-24 mag so better for a WMR barrel on the Quad rifle at a longer open range somewhere - at least longer than our indoor 25/30 yard range at the club !! To be honest I don't really know to go for for the best, but I do have a budget to think off !!! (Anyway, my Class 1 still hasn't arrived yet so I can't buy anything other than the scope anyway...... ) Bri
LXX73
I use a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 on the .22lr. £125 from a guy of american flebay. For the price I cannot fault the scope.
Newsportshooter
Cheap scope on good rifle = accuracy level of superb scope on ****e gun. One scope will outlast many barrels Buy as many guns as you like but only one gunslip = stay married thoughts for the day. It all depends what you call cheap. There is no need to go out and pay £500 for a scope for a £500 rifle. Yes the old adage pay as much for the scope as you do the rifle would fit quite nicely here. BUT with the sort of usage this rifle will get (I would imagine that it is, in the majority, going to be used for vermin at sub 150 yard distances) at that range with the small ammount of recoil generated (even by the .17 HMR) I would suggest that you can get a perfectly adequate and indeed very good scope for around the £200 mark which will be more than adequate for the task at hand. As you can see from my rifle I have a AGS scope (which was £150) and I have had no problems whatsoever hitting bunnies etc at range. 1/2" zeroing groups 85 yards are not a problem. One thing of note though is as you get over the 20x mag most cheaper scopes tend to suffer in the quality of image but to be honest that has never really bothered me as (as a mere mortal) past 20x mag the scope image tends to be a little to shakey (due to me) to be usefull. I really wouldn't go out and spend loads of cash on a rifle scope unless you intend to keep it for years and use it on larger calibre rifles (and at that stage I would imagine like most people you would buy another scope for 'that' rifle anyway....) Also remember that if you knock any scope and damage it (your fault) I no which one I would prefer to replace..... Well done on choosing a top rifle. labrador
do your self a favor and go to a gun shop and look through the scope to see if it suits your eyes for me it was abushnell sportsman 3-9x40 £100 you will never know what optics suit youbest until you look through them. i once went into a shooting shop to buy a set of binos, i had my mind set in a pair of bushnells and i left with a pair of opticrons. always try before you buy. lab. TheHunter
VXIII is a super scope, make sure you look through it before you buy as it has a long eye relief, x10 is all you will ever need if you stay with a 22 but as mentioned earlier it is on the edge for anything further. anschutz.17hmr
if the rifles only being used in daylight then you won,t notice a lot of difference between a cheap scope and a expensive one but if its being used at dawn or dusk the top end scopes (s+b swarovski zeiss)will make a big difference! 20x mag sounds a bit high for me! omegabri
Looks like I'll be going for a Leupold VX-II 4-12x50 scope for the Sako Quad rifle......!! Next question !! Do I get the Leupold RM Sako 1" High mounts for that scope on a Sako Quad (Leupold ref: 54410)
omegabri
Got a Hawke 6-24x56 Sidewinder IR Mil-dot...... I know (before you say....), I can't get the barrel off easily - but it's a dead nice target set-up now and works a dream Bri..
Dave-G
Got a Hawke 6-24x56 Sidewinder IR Mil-dot.... Bri.. Unless you can find higher mounts - which might be difficult considering you already have them for the 56mm objective bell.
JRDS
The higher the mounts the worse the cheek weld, I have high mounts on my Quad and do not get a good cheek weld. I am now going down the Weaver rail QD mount route so I don't have to worry about clearance for the barrel. I have a Sightron 4.5 - 14 x 42 with the HHR Reticule and find it and excellent choice, have had 3 Leupy's in the past and was not over keen on the fussy eye relief.
