Beardo
the first ones look similar to Sonic II's, which i've been using - they work well, but aren't very comfortable. Will (HarfordWMJ) uses the second pair - what are they like Will? Edited December 23, 2008 by nickbeardo
utectok
Personally I think your far better of with the muff style it really will protect your hearing and I use mine all the time as they can be set to magnify sounds great if you flush a pheasant and want early warning. Granted it takes a bit of getting used to but I guess so does hearing loss. Just mho.

Cranfield
I can't stand the ear muff types and have used Emtec in ear protectors for the last 12 years and they are excellent. A friend of mine has the ear muff types where you can adjust the levels from magnifying the sound, to blotting it out altogether. He is constantly fiddling with them and 9 times out of 10 fires his gun with them on "magnify" and blows his head off.

Unless they are broken that shouldn't happen, they cut out as soon as they detect a loud noise irrespective of the volume they are at. The Croatian boar shooters are now using them as amplifiers do they can here the pitter patter of piggy feet just before the big bang
John_R
I just bought some of those Napier ones in your post, so I'll let you know how I get on. However, I'm not shooting till Jan 11th now so that might be a bit late if you are planning to shop now.
Edward
I have the napier ones they are good when shooting on your own, and when I am with company I use Sonic IIs which are similer to the first ones. But as nickbeardo has said they aint very comfatable.

But as nickbeardo has said they aint very comfatable. When you say they are good when you are on your own, does that mean you can't hear normal conversation with them? I used the disposable type a few times, and because they simply mute everything they are no good when you are with someone, but mostly I didn't like it when I was on a walkabout and I couldn't hear whether or not I was making noise whilst walking. I Know the electronis ones fit the bill but If I can get the protection and still be able to hear normaly when not shooting.
Edward
You can hear convosation close at hand if they are talking normaly but at any range greater than 5meters I can only hear muffled voice. The sonics have to be the best you can hear normaly through them, but they do hurt abit when taking them out
Dunkield
I have had a pair on Sonic II's for about 20 years, I got another pair recently and the are made from completely different material, they are very uncomfortable to wear. My originals ate made from what I would describe as soft rubber, and they newer ones are more like harder plastic. If you have the older ones you are in luck as they can made even more comfortable by taking the valves out and chucking the rubber bit in boiling water for a few seconds
Beardo
you could take the valves out and then mold some of those sticky latex earplugs around them, that might be a nice workaround silicone plugs link

Nial
I've got a pair that look like the first ones you posted but got them from Mole Valley Farmers (cheaper). A couple of times my ears started ringing very slightly while shooting skeet on my own, ie I'd put a good number of cartridges through the gun in quick sucession. I also kept forgetting to put them in as they're fairly comfortable (for short periods) and you forget whether they're in of out. I ended up spending a fair bit on the Deben slimline electronic cans. These work brilliantly, great protection, conversation is very clear and they keep your ears warm. I'd definitely spend the money again. Nial. stumpy28
i was using foam ear plugs but have just tryed thes ear plugs with valves in them made or rubber they are much better as you can hear rele well until the shot is taken. having tryed these i visited my loacal deaf school and they talked to me about the types that they supply he spoke first about these plugs that were like a digital hearing aid they aloud you to hear better than normal untill you shot then they stopped all the sound and these were molded to you ear but at £500 a pair i can t afford it but he then said about these other plugs again molded to your ear made of rubber with or without the valves in gunna cost 15 each plus 20 to have the molds made well worth it £50 for proper molded ear plugs that are from a proper hearing specialist. im going to have them fitted in january. Cranfield
What's the rough cost of these Cranfield? 12 years ago they cost me around £40 I seem to remember, I don't know what the current price is, but call them and ask for a quote. http://www.noisebreaker.co.uk/

Will (HarfordWMJ) uses the second pair - what are they like Will? They're ok, I've gone back to using my noise cancelling earphones that I use for my mobile, so I can answer the phone when I'm shooting without faffing about. Beardo
Hi Nickbeardo, Have you managed to try these out yet what your dear old ma sent you?, they look smart and i see the star rating is 4.5. Funnily enough - been out with them this afternoon for the first time - absolutely love them, you can hear a pin drop at 100 yards but a shotgun going off next to you doesn't even make you blink. plus they kept my ears nice a warm. They are amazingly thin compared to other brands so they don't get in the way of your stock, and they have a headphone in socket, so i can plug my phone into them which is handy. They are stereo which is doesn't show in the ad. They get my top marks. Edited December 27, 2008 by nickbeardo
