pump action

I often use a Mossberg on the clays (for a change and a laugh), and yes, you can shoot simmo pairs with a pump if you get your finger out :D

Some days I actually shoot clays better with the Mossy than I do with my Beretta :sly:

You shouldn't have any trouble using it at clay grounds, you might get the odd strange look from snobs, but I wouldn't let that bother you.

Having said all that, they're obviously not ideal guns for clays, but they are more fun

Does anybody on this forum use a pump action on a clay site? I would like to get one because they are cheaper (and i prefer them to o/u`s)and use it at my local site. I would n`t want to waste my money by not be able to use it there or any where else for that matter :sly:

Ring the grounds you intend to visit then? Buy a Napier Autosafe flag too.

For what it's worth the grounds i've used don't object.

I use a pump action a lot on clays, and get reasonable scores. I bet there's people here who can get much better scores too.

The thing with noobs, as you describe yourself Ian, is that they dont always understand how things work. With a pump action they always think you shoot, take the gun out of your shoulder, rack the slide, remount, fire. This couldnt be further from the truth.

Just as an example in this advert you can see it being done. Visit the BenelliUSA website to see Tom Knapp shoot 9 or 10 clays in 1 throw with a pump action :sly:

With very little practice one can cycle a pump extremely quickly and with great economy of movement and effort. I use a Benelli Supernova for fowling, pigeon and clays and have reached the stage where the action of pumping has become completely subconscious.

The PA is still very popular in the U.S. where huge numbers of them are used for competitive clay shooting.

I agree, you get very fast after a while. When I first got mine, I PM'd Throdgrain on here (because he's the main man for pumps :D ) because when I went to cycle the next cartridge, it used to drop out through the gap in the elevator. I blamed the design, the gun, everything except me.

Basically, I was so slow that the thing was just sliding out :sly:

Absolutely no chance of that happening now. I'm like greased lightning :beer::lol::lol:

flags are a good idea, but my local ground just told me to keep the slide to the rear, the beach is open and everyone can see the slides back and its safe; check with the ground tho, i bought my pump from them so theyre a bit more relaxed :sly:

Both great guns in different ways. Today I was shooting at Court Farm at Horne CPC (with my Benelli semi-auto) and someone said some comment about semi-autos. I did say I dont know what you're worried about, it has a breech flag and it's pointed at the sky anyway, but god knows what this chap would have thought if I'd been using the Mossberg. Moral is, you can't please all the people all the time, so please yourself instead :good: So long as you're safe there should never be a problem.

I bought a Wingmaster 3 weeks ago and it's terrific fun to shoot (There's something about that click-click pump sound that makes me want to buy a sheriff's badge and wear aviators). The only looks or comments i have had so far have been positive.

One thing i would say is, be a luv and tidy up after you've shot - spent cartridges left all over the floor might attract a few comments!!

I have a Benelli Super Nova and its a great gun, was shooting pigeons with it yesterday. After a while you don't even notice the pump you just do it automatically.

There are a few clay grounds round here, the snobby one said don't bring it at all and went on about people who turn up in cammo and "American gung-ho attitude" comments. Although when talking about semis and that they weren't keen on them either he commented that out of all the safety disciplinarys at the club all of them have been with o/u guns.

The other clay ground is more relaxed and people go with whatever they want, it is a bit further to travel though but I think worth it.
