docholiday
I have just been asked to help with some rabbit and fox problems, up until now I have always lamped from a land rover using a lamp from the cig lighter, However this bit of land doesnt allow you to get a vehicle on to the ground so will need a scope mounted lamp, as I have never used one before would be grateful for advice re brand and battery. Anybody have any thoughts. Doc
steve_b_wales
Get a Cluson Blazerlite with Scope adapter. This is a 2 million candle power lamp and it's small and lightweight. Another good option is a Lightforce 140. this is not so powerfull, but is still good enough for most situations. You can pick up a good 12V battery for around £30. Get one with a good ampage, like 17 amp/hour. Edited February 17, 2009 by steve_b_wales
mr smith
Try your local sparky trade supplier for cheap batteries.
varmintator
get a deben gun light just clips on and has a nice 6 or 12 volt battery a nice bit of kit if you are lamping alone on foot
Dougy
Cluson are good, whats it going on, does'nt say. 2million yes brill at 200yds+ but you may find a bit too much light, too much battery drain, your going to need a fair size battery AND have to carry it about for some time, are you super fit and into power lifting ? You will find the Clulite hard to beat they do a 1/2 million and a 1 million LA4 i think i have, plenty of light for the job without the need for spotting Satellites

Beardo
if it's for a centrefire/rimfire i'd go the Lightforce route (170), air rifle/rimfire got with a Deben (Mini Tracer Pro)
garyb
I use a scope mounted LightForce 170 coupled with a 26ah battery which I wear in a rucksack on my back. This gives me a good 3hours or so of use, I don't use filters as its mainly for foxing with the .223 but it does have an inline dimmer control
Rick O'Shea
For your battery I suggest the Deben 2 battery belt pack - this is the most comfortable way of carrying sizeable batteries around when solo lamping. I also use the Deben variable power mini tracer lamp on the scope and no I dont work for Deben or get commission from them! Take a look below: Belt/battery setup Mini Lamp
docholiday
Great work guys lots to think about, its to go on a .17hmr with schmidt and bender scope, I think the scope is 30mm but will have to check, are the deben mini tracers 25mm mounts ?? garyb
I'd go bigger and down the lightforce route - even for a HMR Remember what you can't see - you can't shoot.

Agree with Gary though (and we've tested both side by side), i'd probably go down the Lightforce 170 route now (though the Tracer has been great on my air rifle)

Rick O'Shea
I USE MY LIGHTFORCE 170 FOR HAND HELD LAMPING BUT WOULD FIND IT A BIT BIG SAT ON TOP OF SCOPE?
straightshooter1
lightforce 140/170 I interchange depending were I'm going coupled with a 17ah battery
Dave-G
IIRC the Mini pro costs more than the Maxi pro - and mine had a dim patch right in the beam centre. I have never tried a max though. The Deben plastic scope mount fits up to 30mm tubes - and if needed would also sling below slender sound moderators such as an ASE Ultra (28mm diameter) - like my Atom Tactical here which has a more powerfull battery pack than usual: PS: If you are curious about the blobs of Blue Tack on the stock they retain a piece of glass in just the right place to stroke it with a piece of polystyrene which makes a reasonable squeak when wet.
Axe
I use the Deben Max Pro it does everything I could want it to do and has a good beam length without being obtrusive or heavy. Dave, you've made me re-think getting my barrels shortened. What length is that on what calibre? 'ere is mine.
Dave-G
It's a 15" HMR axe - I note your lucky enough to have a chief of police tolerant enough to allow close fox to be taken with rimfire. I have been "forced" to variation for a Cf because ours will not condition any RF for fox - and I did offer to get a WMR barrel so I would still only have one powder burner in my possession. They must like causing more guns to get into circulation so I have reserved a nice custon 17REM off someone on the BBS as I'll use it mostly for smaller vermin than fox. Axe
You obviously don't regret the chop and it certainly makes sense having seen it. Yes I am lucky enough to have fox on ticket but I am ever closer to a .223 REM variation, it just makes more sense. But I like the sound of that .17REM, was reading up on them just this afternoon. Also the .17Rem Fireball which apparently is a necked down .221 as opposed to the .223Rem.
