Imperfection
Last week while after woodies,i sat in my hide pouring a coffee when i looked up in the air and noticed a Sparrowhawk comming in fast straight at my decoys! Only at the very last moment did it realise they wasnt real and pull up. Today,i was again shooting woodies when there was a lull so got up and had a pee facing the scrubland behind my hide.Stood there relieving myself when all of a sudden a head pops up 15ft away in the tangled mass-it was a Roe deer! Not sure who was more suprised-me or the deer or if it felt intimidated cos it was staring at my tackle, but it took off at great speed regardless. Anyone else had odd encounters? Ozzy Fudd
i was sitting on a hillside decoying one day when a private chopper arrived on the scene, it was hovering 500ft out from me but because of the steepness of the hill it was on a level with me. it was dicking about for 5 mins scaring every crow and pigeon for miles, i climbed out of the hide to stretch my legs (thought id take the opportunity while there was nothing about) and took the shotgun; dont know what he thought i was going to do but the pilot started taking evasive action before ********* off very quickly
EastSussexLad
Haha, Talk about funny moments - My dad used to run a small duck shooting sydicate on a few ponds he had... Anyway one day we had done the morning shoot and just going down a beaten track to one of the other ponds, Only to find an car on the side of the track (This track hardly ever gets used) So as about 4/5 motors full of shooting blokes are driving down this track all having a nose at what the car was doing, only to find a very old couple going at it in the back seat haha... So you could imagin about 15odd blokes beeping horns and shouting out the windows ahaha that was a right laugh Funnist bit was when the old man opened the door and come running down the track with it all hanging out waving his hands having a moan at us... fo5ter
Me and a colleague once saw a big cat whilst lamping on the golf course i shoot in leicestershire. since we were using the air rifles we decided to ****** off at that point! When i mentioned it at a countryside watch meeting the police wildlife officer said "yep, that sounds about right"
Imperfection
i was sitting on a hillside decoying one day when a private chopper arrived on the scene Couple weeks ago,the Police chopper came across quite slow & low-right at a crucial time when two woodies came into my patern.I didnt dare take the shot because although it was out of range of my gun,the muzzle flash would have been clearly visible and wouldnt want to be accused of attempting to shoot down the flying rozzers! Me and a colleague once saw a big cat whilst lamping on the golf course i shoot in leicestershire. since we were using the air rifles we decided to ****** off at that point! When i mentioned it at a countryside watch meeting the police wildlife officer said "yep, that sounds about right" The farmland i shoot over is nextdoor to where i work and one of our drivers spotted a big cat few weeks ago.Could make a intresting chat cos farmer always asks how i got on..."a dozen woodies,3 crows and a Puma!" :o
dogfox
my mate fell into a bog on one of the last ocasions i was out, the ground looked perfectly normal..then he was gone up to his waiste in sh$te!! it was quite funny from my perspective to see him shoot down in front of me, i pulled him out and spent the next 10 mins trying to get the crud out of his mossbergs pump action :yp:

Zapp
Hit and pricked a bird over wheat stubble a couple of years ago. It flew away, much to my annoyance. 10 minutes later, 2 birds surprised us by coming from behind us, high over the decoys. I was getting up to fire when one of the birds simply fell from the air, it obviously being the one I had pricked earlier. Wierd ZB
bruno22rf
About ten years back i was out branching young rooks in a small wood on an old RAF bomber station. After a while whilst searchind the branches for more targets i saw a light aircraft that seemed to be waggloing its wings-i was staring at it for a few seconds wondering what was going on when it suddenly collided with a glider-i was dumbstruck to have witnessed this accident and i continued to watch as the glider flew on almost as if nothing had happened -the light aircraft ,however, cilmbed hard before turning upside down and plunging fill throttle into the ground about 100 yards from a row of houses. It took the emergency services until the following morning to remove his body-the glider landed safely at Bicester.Just one of the amazing things ive seen whilst shooting! jonboy1
about 3 years ago i was pigeon shooting on a field of peas and during a short lull of birds coming in i noticed to my left a vixen climbing out of a ditch and walk about 6 feet into the field. As you do, i thought about taking the shot but it was such a lovely sunny day and she looked so content that i decided not to (plus there is no livestock on any of my permissions to protect) i just watched her she could have only been about 20 yards from my hide and had no idea i was there. After a couple of minutes, to my surprise 5 or 6 very young cubs appeared and began to suckle from her as she stood, a couple even hung on to the teats as she walked forward! It was such a lovely scene and i was so glad that i did'nt pull that trigger! (go on admit it, we've all got a soft side somewhere!)
dogfox
(go on admit it, we've all got a soft side somewhere!) have done the exact same, pheasant went up in front of me when i was out a few weeks after Xmas and it got caught in the sun, i had the safety off, gun shouldered and my eye right on him, but i couldnt fire!! glad i didnt now! Thumpersniper
Ha fair play john! you can congratulate yourself on being a true countryman and animal lover in my opinion. If that had been me and it was on the lambing field, i would probably have destroyed them all, but if it was somewhere a fox didnt matter then i would certainly have done the same they are such beautifull animals when they are healthy! i have spared a few animals, usualy because they are young and i feel bad, but during the breeding months if i am pest controling destroying young is probably the least cruel method of controling a population compared to say killing a lactating female .. leaving young to starve to death somewhere. Good on ya! SP
jonboy1
fairplay to you thumpersniper and i respect that on livestock permissions, especially lambing fields foxes need to be culled regardless of age, but being a sucker for anything that's a baby, vermin or not i know i would'nt be able to the deed. It's a good job none of my permissions do have livestock, cos i think the farmers would tell me where to go! Saying that, i do shoot pigeons all year round so have undoubtedly orphaned quite a few squabs . . . Ooh err, i think i'd better go and have a sit down. Ean76
Years ago when I was beating flushing phesants towards the guns on a rather cold frosty morning, I came across a Partridge laying down close to some cover staying VERY still. Birds rising everywhere at the first sign of humans approaching but not this partridge. It had it's eyes open and appeared to be looking right at me as if saying 'you don't scare me pal'. Walked up to it and gave it a light nudge with my welly. Still nothing - no movement at all. Turns out that it had frozen overnight and was stone dead - just perfectly lifelike as was in the sitting position. Anyway, picked it up and at the end of the drive showed it to my Dad and friends and they all couldn't believe it. Put it in the wagon tho. Out of all the years beating, that always sticks in my mind!!!
Thumpersniper
Ha Johnboy, reminded me aswell about a keeper friend on an estate i used to milk cows on when i was 16, i used to help him a bit on weekends between milkings, and he had this cock pheasant that would follow us down a particular field fighting our wellies, flapping and attacking them! he was kind of a pet, even though a very agresive and rude pet, so on shoot days the George would catch it and put it in a dustbin untill the shooting was over to spare him the guns!! Mind you the ones i saw shooting there couldnt hit a barn door he'd have been quite safe! SP
