gibby
Does anyone know any info. about an article from a magazine about shooting magpies and whoever bags the most wins a £500 reward, such as the name of the magazine or any other info. Anything will help. Gibby
Nicky
I heard something on the radio about it. I think you have to shoot them and send the wings in. I hope I heard wrong as the por old postie will have messy problem on his hands. B) I can't remember the name of the rag, It was 'shooting' something I think ( not alot of help I know ). But you just watch those antis go to town about it.

Gemini
Think so? Have a look at this then and tell me if you still think it’s a good idea- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4304103.stm The last thing we need as a shooting community is something the anti’s can get their teeth into. We know the damage to the songbird populations that Magpies can do, and we know that they need thinning out to a great extent. But the public at large haven’t got a clue other than what the Blair Broadcasting Corporation tells them. G.M. cooke103
no not really i see what you meen after the fox hunting ban the mp's may be big-headed that they 'banned it' and this may be another reson to have a go at us even more! jake
Deako
Well I for one think it IS a good idea. For Christs sake lads, why do we keep on bowing down to these purple haired, face pierced, stinking, ******* self righteous b@stards?? You've already seen hunting with dogs go down the pan (note, I did not say 'fox hunting'), lets get some balls about us. We do what we do because WE LIKE IT and its actually GOOD for conservation. Never be ashamed of that. P.S. The RSPB are welcome to tour my woods whenever they like...the local birding club are delighted with the diversity of birdlife there...not a magpie or crow to be seen though. gibby
Managing to get hunting with dogs banned, they have now decided to move onto fishing. I am fed up of people disturbing lifestyles of people who need these industries to live. The usual rider is “so long as it causes no harm to others”. Which is fine, but now we have stretched the definition of “others” to include furry vermin, and now fish.
Gemini
Deako, I agree with you 100%, BUT!!!!!! If we want to show the world what we do then we should also make the same effort to tell them the reason why. It’s no good being “Hard-nosed” and saying bo**ocks to them, because that simply makes them even more sure that we are eejits and they are right. The same thing happened a few years ago when the “National Pigeon Day” was bought to the attention of the national media. This day has been running for years, but some “Wag” thought it would be a good idea to have a little competition to see who could shoot the most. The competition was roundly condemned as “Crass” and “Stupid” by non other than our own BASC, and almost caused a change to the laws concerning the “General Licence”. B) If you want to get the Magpie population down, then have a well thought out plan of action to do it. Tell the public the reason why, and then get on with it with the minimum of fuss. To offer a £500 “Reward” for the most shot, makes it look more like killing for money rather than vermin control. G.M.
Cranfield
As someone who, as a lad, can remember taking fox, rat and mole tails, together with the heads of sparrows, starlings, pigeons, rooks and crows down to the Town Council and being issued with Rabbit Control cartridges against a points formula (fox=10, sparrow=1), I don't think such a public bounty system is a good idea. This type of "in your face" stunt, can needlessly offend Mrs Jones at No12 and be exploited by our enemies. Its very attractive and popular to be gung ho and say we don't care a XXXX for anyone, but all the time we have a Government that cares nothing about the Country way of life, we run the risk of alienating Public support. Before accusing me of being ball-less , I walked in the March, tried to stop the Ban and still support by email, letter and funds, attempts to overturn it. I will defend my right to all "Country Pursuits", but I believe there is a right way and a wrong way.
jim_whitson
Quite. I don't think decent sportsmen should feel they need to jump to the defence of the kind of people who keep score and measure their day by dead birds, just out of solidarity. On the other hand, it's important to keep a united front against the antis. It's pretty tough really... I think such things as magpie killing contests make our job very hard, and the antis' job very easy. No-one wants the public to think of hunters as people who like to kill as many things as they can - apart from the antis! Just my 1/2p-worth. Cranfield
Just because we all love shooting and other Country Sports, doesn't mean that we can't disagree and debate our opinions. Nor does it mean we are not united against those, that threaten our interests. Thats my opinion, I don't know about "you lot".
old rooster
If anybody shoots any hares (before it's banned) can you please save me the ears for fly tying. On another note I'm assuming that very few of you will be voting for Mr. B.Liar and his band of toadies at the next election ? rjimmer
The RSPB are in business to finance the fancy lifestyles of their hierachy. They won't say anything in public to damage their donations. They know what good you can do by controlling corvid numbers. They employ someone to do it on the Somerset Levels, on condition that all evidence of the activity is destroyed. Can the prize be won by the use of Larsen traps? If so how about a few suggestions on what the winning amount might be! Edited March 9, 2005 by rjimmer
