Nicky T
Like the title and topic description say really: is anyone here planning on shooting the English Open Sporting shoot at Highlodge on 7th-10th May and if so what day are you shooting on? MC
The CPSA are taking the **** with the cost of it, I thought £72 for 200 was a little steep today but £53 for a 100 bird is really taking it.
Bagsy
Must admit I was considering shooting it until I saw the cost
Catamong
Yep, I'll be there 9.00am Friday morning, let's hope the layout is worth the money, the penny hasn't yet dropped with the CPSA that if you keep jacking up the cost every year, people won't shoot it. Markio
Wow, that really is steep. On a side but relevant note, i rang a local shoot to try and get a group rate sorted for a few non-shooters to they could try their hand at it. £60 a pop for 50 birds. It was all in granted but it's no way to entice people into the sport, and the chance at repeat business, is it?
Mungler
High lodge is an existing venue (already got traps, staff, a shop and cafe) and yet they want £53 for 100 clays and of course cpsa membership. If I were running the clay grounds I would be having a close look at the popularity of the likes of the essex masters and questioning just exactly what is it that the CPSA does for clay shooters? I have not renewed with the CPSA and will not be doing so and so will not be shooting the English Open.

I don't know whether anybody else at the Essex Masters yesterday noticed that the CPSA stand wasn't exactly rushed off their feet with enquiries
Mungler
I thought they had some neck turning up to that event to tout their wares.

MC
Yes but all they did was drop a trailer off, there was never anyone there.

Granted £60 a head is expansive but there you are paying for coaches, clays cartridges tea and coffee and probably bacon rolls or similar. For £53 you get 100 clays. Even by shooting ground costs that is £28 clear. Mind you if there is a 25K payout then that can be justified.
Emmsy
i have entered for friday afternoon but not recieved any conformation yet.
Nicky T
Totally agree that £53 for 100 clays is a lot of dosh so will have to think a little harder if it's worth the 7 hour round trip to shoot this one. Hmmmmm......
paulos
I agree in regards to the cost. I will be shooting at High Lodge next month though, hopefully on the Saturday afternoon I am in dire need of some practice beforehand though so may need a couple of trips down to Kibworth/Kegworth prior to it
starlight32
High lodge has lost a great deal of popularity in the area due to the same reasons as mentioned above. I am more of the opinion that the ground does not really want the general 'most of us' shooting there anymore, but prefers Range rover and big merc customers these days. You go for a round of a 100 with a group of you and with your shells, a breakfast and you knock the best part of 70 notes out. This is fine but when you think about it that is alot of money in this current climate for anyone to spend regularly. I tried to re-organize another charity day there this year but the costs were just too high to make it feasable. Instead I have gone to a semi haybale ground where the support being offered is well and truly excellent. As with all sport and pastime there is a cost to bear I know but as I mentioned earlier clay shooting will take a hammering more than many sports as there is just no way of making it economical for the individual in this climate. Nicky T
Does anyone know if the English Open is a registered event?
paulos
It is All the CPSA championships are registered (the Beretta World is as well now, but I'm not entirely sure how )
Nicky T
I'm in! Hopefully shooting at 9am on the Sunday morning if i get my first choice Anyone else down there at that time?
Catamong
I'm in! Hopefully shooting at 9am on the Sunday morning if i get my first choice Anyone else down there at that time? Nick, You're lucky to get that slot this close to the event - it just shows how entries for the Sporting majors have nosedived over the last few years due to inept management by the CPSA. Cat. Nicky T
Cat, Still waiting on confirmation of which spot I've got. Worse case it'll mean a day off work in the week Nick
mikee
high lodge is about 25 minutes down the road and i some times turn up to watch bits of the event if there is a big one on, some times youre lucky and get to watch some of the top boys shoot, i dropped out of the cpsa a few years ago when squading was brought in at the majors, i never realistically had any chance of winning so just enjoyed a day out with my mates and would wander round at our own pace so having to spend the day with a group of people i didnt know or even like on some occasions, this and the cost of entry was just too much, i even got squaded with 2 ****holes that all day picked and niggled at the rest of the squad and referee to try and get missed birds scored, i was so ****** of that i let phil boakes know exactly what i thought of the cpsa and their ****** up squad idea and that they could shove it where the sun dont shine, £53/100 is taking the **** when you see the prize list considering most of the big prizes are donations from sponsors, they can keep it good luck to any pw members shooting it though mikee
Catamong
Yes, squadding is another reason why entries have declined, you're quite right most people don't like it, and at CPSA run shoots it never works, with massive delays on some stands whilst others remain empty. Cat.
Peter De La Mare
I must have been lucky. I enjoy the squad idea, maybe it's my amazing interpersonal skills that develops a nice raport in the squard after a couple of stands? Maybe I've been lucky and not been squaded with ####s? But every squad I've been in has been a good one so far and can make a shoot very enjoyable. Only stand hold up I've experienced was stand 1 at the British Open last year. Rabbit trap was playing up badly. Waited there for 20 mins and then skipped it. Some of the refs moaned a little, but when they saw that all the stands around were empty they agreed. When back afterwards and still had to wait nearly an hour for it. Everywhere else has been spot on.
Chard
Being squadded with blokes you know is obviously good or you can be lucky and get with a good crowd, but I know exactly what Mikee means. The thought of getting squadded with some of the knobends that frequent this sport is just too much - it would end in tears Edited April 22, 2009 by Chard
