Alright as some of you no i have an 11 year old lad that comes with me shooting but as i found out on monday he is not up to doing the big days , ie 100 birds shoots . at catton on monday he was beating both me and chard after the first four stands  but went down hill after that . Im no clay shooter averageing 75 out of 100 but where do i go from here .

Do i let him carry on with me in the field or start doing more clays with him . Chard will back me up on this as i think he dropped very few birds on the first stands , im at a loss what to do <_<

Help

The lad is an amazingly competent shot.

It was definitely recoil that spoilt his score on Monday, his shoulder was black and blue by the end of the course, so Christ knows what it was like in the morning

I know exactly where it started going badly wrong, too. There was a stand at the top of a steep wooded valley, where you had to stand in a wooden cage and shoot downhill. His problem was that he was only just tall enough to see over the wooden cage down into the valley. This caused him to make an awkward gun mount, with the corner of the butt poking him in the shoulder - it went downhill from there.

Prior to that he'd been doing OK. He made a fantastic start on the first 2 stands, then there were a couple of weird tricky ones, which he struggled on, but only because they were odd targets that he probably hadn't encountered before, they weren't exactly shots that a game shooter would be likely to encounter.

Great potential, I think he would make a great sporting shooter, but it'll cost you dear :P .

I've never seen a boy of that age shoot so well <_<

He's also a real character, amazing confidence and a great personality. He's a credit to you, Magman and that's a fact

get him a 20 bore and stick him in 50 birders. will take a while to go on to 100s. from what ive heard he will soon pick it up and 3 years down the line england junior squad.

beretta mate would be good to have a meet up with the lad to see what you think

PS, all ready shooting a beretta 20 bore, maybe im over doing it with 24 grm shells

I believe he could get that far. There aren't exactly thousands of kids in this sport and he certainly knows how to use a shotgun. He's certainly not a quitter and I think his confidence and ability will take him a long way. Can you imagine how far he would come on, just by getting a bit bigger?

As you saw at Catton, clays are a rather expensive game and kids don't get a worthwhile discount, so I think a lot of parents are discouraged from giving their kids a real chance at it, unless they're seriously wadded.

As he sounds a sensible young chap, why not ask him what he'd enjoy to shoot more?

At the very least you get some class time out shooting with him and you're safe in the knowledge that he's having fun rather than doing what he thinks you want him to do.

If he's as naturally talented as it sounds he is, then dusting clays in the future for England is sure to appeal at some point in time.

mag, 24gm out of a 20 is same as 28 out of a 12. cut the shot size.

like nickt says, find out what he likes. i really enjoyed pigeons but i also just liked shooting. the more i did the more i liked it but to shoot more you have to do clays. you **** go on the pigeons and guarantee 100 shots so clays it was for me. if you want info on clays let me know.

odd??? why wont it spell ****

Nick all he wants to do is be out shooting , either walking round the fields or on the clays :)

Get his gun fitted properly and have a ISIS or similar recoil reducer put on it. A young lad who shoots with us had the same problem, he would start off well and after 30 or so shots he would fade away as the gun was punishing him.

He had the gun fitted to him and a neoprene cheek saver put on his stock and he now shoots really well. And without any recoil issues.

Under no circumstances encourage children to shoot clays - Shot at the Harty Ferry a few Sundays back with stepson, stepdaughter and her boyfriend - 75 quid for 50 sporting if you include the carts - Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!

the clay ground i go to dont seem all the exspensive then ,, i went last week just to have a go really , got take your pic of guns so chose one , got 50 cartrages paid for 50 clays and off i went cost me £16 what i dont think is bad for 50 carts about 66 clays hire of a gun and the owners time coming round with us showing us all the new clay set ups

  • 1 month later...

My lad is now 11 and has been shooting for about a year.

He recently upgraded his O/U 12g to a Winchester 101 which I cut 2 inches off the stock so it fit him better.

He also wears a Past pad Past Recoil Pads

He can shoot all day now if he wants and never gets any brusing or feels any real recoil. He also shoots a 12g SxS wearing this pad and still feels no recoil.
