vole
I like to take a minimum of gear up to the field so for me,4 crow decoys as in 2 flocked,2 plastic is quite enough. Last year I did ok with this ,no big bags but not too bad. This year they are flying over me like cruise missiles,I see a quick look then gone.Any suggestions please? Ozzy Fudd
crows are smart, theyve probly learnt to recognise the decoys. dont use them for a while maybe?
Spaniel
They are far to smart, even shooting them last weekend and this weekend we could see the difference. Last week they were flying over us non stop, just to take a look at the decoys, but this week they are having none of it. Last week 12 in a hour, this week about 3. You could see them avoiding the same area...like i said they are not stupid..their flight pattern had changed and they were flying out of shot range, taking a moe diagnal flight line away from the trailers we had been using for our cover
utectok
can get difficult try adding a floater and learning to call them thats the best fun. It's very satisfing calling back a crow that was having none of it only to get a bit of high speed lead poisoning ! vole
Cheers chaps. I do my best with the Lohman and the Primus etc but cant seem to hit the right notes I guess.I pretty much sound like the real ones kind of. Am resorting to the odd magpie coming in to a Primos mouse squeaker. Would rather be getting crows though. I also make a point of not being seen on my way to the hide too. Any advice on using the Lohman caller etc?
malkiserow
I have learned that the plastic deeks do not work, but the flocked ones do. I have 3 flocked ones and they are enough to get started, I use bike spokes to prop up the heads of the shot ones. A bounder with one always helps and also one on a post watching the others is real killer for me
Bluebarrels
I have learned that the plastic deeks do not work, Sorry but i have to disagree,i use mainly plastic crow decoys and have had some 90+ bags last year and some 70+bags upto date this year,i agree flocked decoys are good, but wont stand the test of too many trips into the field ,the flocking soon starts to rub off.Maybe later in the year the crows are a little wiser to decoys, but at the present time with so many young around, plastic or flocked makes no difference, they will commit to your pattern BB
steve_b_wales
I agree. Plastic ones do work, even when wet. Flocked ones are better, but you don't need to have them. I bought a flocking kit for some of mine, with good results. The best bit of kit, apart from the Primos crow caller, is a flapper. I use mine with crow attached, and it's connected to an intermittent timer. This works brilliantly, and I have had many good bags of crows, the best being 128. They work fine for me mate wet or dry, everyone on here seems to rate the primos crow caller, never used one myself, just ordered one so will be giving it a go-sometime soon will let you know if it works for me?BB i also find a floater/bouncer produces good results on crows too. mossy835
i have no trouble with them coming in two decoys,i just put out 5 decoys, saturday i had 46 crows, on stubble
luckytrigger
Another vote for the crow flapper. Best bag with mine was 89 and 8 pidgeons although ive struggled to get anything like that since!. They do wise up quickly though so keep changing your patterns. flytie
I have five plastics that I have used for years, some days they wouldn't stop coming in, and some days it was a struggle to get them to come in at all. I use the Y neck props for any that i shoot. I improved my lot by using two calls, an Acme and Primos Power and learning how to growl into them, not just blow. Then I improved again by using a floater/bouncer. I have to limit the amount of kit I take out, so I do not have all the battery powered gizmo's, but my mate Alan has some moving decoys and a magnet and has had some really big bags with them. A good hide that's as natural as possible and being well hidden (gloves, hat and face veil) are the best tips I was given. Atb, ft

Had some luck yesterday i went out to the farm just for a quick walk around (no deeks) and found the slurry pit teeming with rooks and managed 3 with 3 quick shots then another 7 more and a couple of pidgeons by just hiding behind some old machinery and waiting until they came back in. reckon i would have shot more if i had a fac shottie
tweedledee
plastic decoys work fine. are you sure they can`t see you or possibly a shot bird with it`s wings out before the pattern. crows are very wary and if something is n`t right they won`t commit to decoys.i have shot thousands of crows over the years with a dozen plastic decoys and a primos crow call. once at it a while you can tell by their behaviour what is going on and if something is n`t right.if they veer of as they approach the coys you have a problem on your part.early morning works well with decoys as the crows being hungry are a little moe apt to drop in for breakfast

wildfowler.250
I've found a floater/bouncer works well to bring the birds in plus a few deeks and then stick down any dead birds
