  1. At night with a rimfire using subs... and someone else doing the same thing and you don't know each other are there... with all due respect, I fail to understand how you believe no-one could get hurt. Agreed, daylight, shotguns or even a group out zeroing or something similar could be perfectly safe if you know where each other are.
  2. And this is exactly why I will never go out on my permissions without phoning the farmer first - and he will never have anyone shooting unless they phone him first. If I can't get hold of him I don't go out, simple as that. On the other hand, I do have permissions where the farmer says there is no need to call, just carry on whenever, no-one else comes out so you'll be OK. And then I find out that a load of others all have permission there, and he's told them all the same thing... bloody annoying. Even more so when the farmer has a mixture of owned and rented, and they assume that they can give you permission for the rented when the landowner has people out too...
  3. Proofed or not, air rifle or not, I couldn't get one mail order when I tried recently. Nor could I buy one from my local RFD's. Even though I had one on my rifle (and on my licence) apparently you can't get a new one until you have got the existing one taken off (like handed into a police station and getting a receipt) and then gone through the procedure of getting a variation to get a new one. Quite frankly the whole thing was a bloody joke. How airgunners get them is beyond me, I'd love to know. Stupid thing is, I can buy magazines that hold bullets without a variation or even a licence, yet a tubular bit of metal with a thread and baffles - oh no, it's classed as a firearm.... Madness.

    wood burners

Youve got to advise your local authority building control department if you install a log burner or do anything to an existing chimney. The exception to this is if you have a HETAS registered installer do the work for you in which case they're authorised to self certify the work and log this with the council for you. If you don't then you leave yourself open to problems should you ever have to make an insurance claim connected with the appliance or chimney, and you will also have problems at house selling time as conveyancers are insisting on this detail to protect their clients. I'd also urge you (going back to the insurance thing) to keep proof of 6 monthly sweeping by a qualified sweep. This will also help you out if you ever have a problem with the appliance or the flue or the chimney. Again, conveyancers are picking up on this. Hope this helps!
  5. NOW SOLD..................NOW SOLD...............NOW SOLD I have a brand new Sako Finnfire .22LR 10 shot magazine for sale. £39 posted 1st class, paypal preferred but a cheque would be OK too. Looking to get what I paid (and to save me a trip back for a refund) so it's a fixed price. Cheers.
  6. This is just about the best advice you could get, there's nothing many would be able to add to this. On the subject of targets, I use old greetings cards and simply use the plain white halves. Get a ruler and with a pen simply draw a nice big cross. I find that using a thicker pen (like one of those sharpie things) is beast. You could check with a small spirit level that the horizontal line is perfectly horizontal once you've got it stapled or pinned, this way you know that when you cover that line with the crosshair you'll be shooting consistently. Then, all of a sudden you'll hit every rabbit you shoot at. Great feeling. Some days I find this more therapeutic than trapsing around after the bunnies!
  7. If I recall correctly, I once tried this and found that if I zeroed for Winchester Subs at 75 yards then Winchester Lazers HV's were close to that zero at just over 100 yards. After thinking about it having written it, it doesn't seem right but I'm sure that's what I found. If it wasn't 100 yards it may have been 125 yards. Probably totally confused you. I've confused myself now!
  8. Well I learnt something today! Apparently you are not allowed to sell a whole host of stuff that is or can be related to firearms on E Bay, including a Sako Finnfire 10 shot magazine! I could understand it for things that you need to show your licence for such as a moderator or ammo, but for a magazine? Most annoying thing is they let me compile the whole advert, including pictures and only told me I couldn't list it right at the end when I was about to hit the 'list' button. ******.
  9. That's expensive - are you restricted for choice where you live or could you 'shop around' - it was only a month or so ago that I paid £37.20 for a brick of 500. To be fair I did ask for a better price that what they were marked up for in the shop (about £50 if I recall correctly) as I thought they were trying it on a bit at that price. I guess they may have gone up in the relatively short space of time though with the price of metal and the exchange rates, wouldn't be surprised. I tries a few Lapua subs a friend had recently, they're cheaper and supposed to be good but they were covered in such a thick layer of wax that I felt I couldn't possibly use them. Problem is, the old Winchester Subs are so good as an all rounder it's likely they know this and keep the price high knowing people will pay it.
  10. In my limited experience of both I would say that the Freelander is really small inside and is difficult to get in and out of without banging your head or hurting your back as the seats are so high compared to the roof... Unreliability (as well documented) can be an issue - they seem to be either really good or really bad, nothing in between. However they're good off road and have a certain kudos, obviously. The X Trail on the other hand is easy to get in and out of, has much more room inside and will probably be more reliable however they do have their issues with turbo's and the like. Can't get an auto box in the diesel ones (unless you go for the new ones) and you can in the Freelander which some prefer for the type of use they get. Don't know about off road but I would assume the Freelander has the upper hand with it's hill descent and so on. I reckon the X Trail looks good, too. Personally I would go for the X Trail but only because of the space, the rear hatch that you can shelter from the rain under and reliability.
  11. Jeez - over a fiver for 50, they are expensive! Just paid £3.72 per box (buying a brick of 500) for Winchester subs. Big difference. Are they really much better?
  12. Sportsmans Gun Centre in Exeter have them 'cos I saw them there last week, but that's not going to help you in Gloucester. What about writing or phoning Eley and explaining that you love their product but can't find any decent local distributors? Any manufacturer really should take this seriously and it may just be that they don't know the end user can't get the product. Sounds like they need to get their marketing and distribution channels sorted. Sometimes theis 'short supply' thing is a cynical attempt by manufacturers (with the co-operation of their distributors) to keep the price unreasonably high.
  13. The mags don't fit the quad. Keep your eyes open for spare mags and buy them if you can, they're in short supply and the new ones are expensive, £37 for the 10 shot, I think the 5 shot is around the same. You may also want to keep a few of the ejector wires (about a fiver) as they are a weak point. Still available but I don't know how long for. As far as I know they stopped making them about 5 years ago when they introduced the quad. I have had mine for 13 years and it has never jammed, misfired or failed to eject, ever. Never had any maintenance other than a bit of lube to the bolt. I reckon they're brilliant, you've made a good choice. Interesting to note also that used ones are selling for more than I paid for mine new 13 years ago! If I was a RFD I'd buy all I could find.
  14. Weird isn't it. I had my licence (rimfire) for 5 years, when it came to renewal my FEO said he'd automatically upgrade it to open as (in his words) you've been a good boy and I know you never go out without contacting your farmers in advance and we like that. I didn't even know you could have an 'open' licence at the time. It pays to be good, obviously!
  15. Regrettably it seems they charge premium prices as they have a bit of a captive market. Nearest large town is Taunton, no gun shop. West Country Guns covers a massive geographical area with a high percentage of their demographic having the means to buy what they want without questioning the price - this would explain why this particular shop has 90% of its floor area crammed with high end clothing... Folk who need to get value who live in or near Taunton find themselves using Avalon at Street or Sportsmans at Exeter.
  16. I urge you to report this to the police. You were going about your lawful business and you received what can clearly be perceived as a threat.
  17. Interesting. Dunno about the HMR but in my experience they used to always be running out of Winchester Subs suggesting that there used to be frequent supply problems. After always finding them elsewhere I too don't buy mine from there now. I often wondered if the 'supply problems' really meant they were trying to keep the price high.
  18. Hmm. Disturbing to say the least.
  19. Seems a bit excessive as you say. I think I've either been lucky in the past or I've just had a good FEO (Taunton, tall chap, close to retirement, initials GM) so I'd say it was just bad luck. Seems plausible that a sickness could delay things. Dunno about you but I always feel guilty about complaining to them, trouble is we need them a lot more than they need us! Can't help but wonder if the complainers get put to the bottom of the pile, and all that. Good luck, hope it happens soon.
  20. My first thought was also something blocking the diesel filter. A cheap enough fix I reckon before looking elsewhere.
  21. I find it quite annoying that the customer always has to bring these design faults to the manufacturers attention. Simple fact is they don't test their products in the real time situations they'll be used in. And then they are shocked when their customers point these things out - bloody wrong I reckon.
