Look at the thread a little down on keeping the SxS going. I am verging toward No3 for the side by side but would use No 2 if available. Of the last two geese I shot on the foreshore last day of the season with No 3 32grm load the first was dead in the air with neck and heart shots. The second came down 100 yards away mortally wounded. The no 3 shot were at their limit. Not all the pellets penetrated all the way through the breast, some did go all the way through and punched through the breast bone into the body cavity, not sure how much energy they had left after that though. On mincing the meat I had several pellets left in the mincer indicating penetration was an issue ? With steel No 1 I would hardly ever get a pellet in the mincer, all pellets would penetrate the body cavity. Cheers

Hi Boyd, Sound advice I think and thanks for that. I was out this morning and only having one expensive Bismuth cartridge left I decided to try a flight with the Eley eco wad 32 grm No 3 steel. I thought the morning was going to be a waste of time as most of the geese were on the other side of the firth in flooded fields and lifted really early and went off upstream rather than crossing over to my side. Anyway I stuck it out and was rewarded with a few skeins heading my way. They were a good height and I dropped the first one dead in the air (much to my surprise and delight!) I let a few marginal ones pass over and had another chance at a good high one just in range, this one planned on a a little before coming down to be retrieved by the dog and knocked on the head. I have yet to process the geese so can't say where I hit either but I suspect with the second bird I was slightly off line as it was sliding side ways a bit in the wind. There was another guy out who is a very good shot (won our club clay comp two years on the trot) and he always shoots 42 grm No 3 steel through his auto, now that's a lot of pellets! and he downs plenty of geese and high geese over the season. So it appears that No 3 does seem to do the job so I may carry on with these. I had seen the RC 34grm No1s and may yet try them but the delivery charge to the Highlands is extortionate! As some of you may know I have been using the AYA Yeoman 2.75 inch chamber for the last month or so for all of my foreshore wildfowling. The goose cartridge has been a very very expensive No 3 36 gm bismuth at £57 per box. I can't go on with that next season and I would like to keep going with the AYA rather than go back to the pump. My findings with the bismuth are that most of the geese have needed a knock on the head and were not dead in the air as I would have expected using the pump and No1 steel. Now this may not be the cartridges fault but could be my accuracy with the SxS so the jury is out at the moment So if I keep going with the AYA for next season I need to use a more affordable cartridge so I may need to home load. I can get 32grm No 3 steel eley carts at the local gun shop but I am thinking these may be a little light in shot size for fore shore geese so I may have to homeload? Having said that I pick up enough 3 inch No 3 steel empty carts from the foreshore and I know they have been used on geese! What would anyone recommend in homeland or factory cartridges to keep the AYA going without costing an arm and a leg? Cheers Flipper

I may get the chance to buy one of these. I believe they are supposed to be one of the best pumps about. Can anyone give me feedback if they have used or owned one? As it is a bottom loader I guess you have to pull the barrel of to clean it, not as easy as a standard pump? How do they handle and what’s the weight? cheers flippers

I am a bit puzzled as to why you want to steel proof it? The gun as it is will shoot standard steel without the need for any re proof. Also if you do want to go ahead and steel proof it I think the only proof for steel is for hp steel? Nice looking gun.

I have never been there but watching Chris greens videos of the area he decoys the Chanel that runs along the marsh and shoots the tide up?

Just catching up with this thread. Like Boyds attempt at super proofing his old AYA sxs, brilliant and he and the gun lived to tell the tale. Can I send my AYA 2.75 chambered Yeoman to you Boyd for proofing for 3 inch!☺️ Just to show you that many of the Spanish made SxS can take a good beating, so to speak, with no harm done, I was on the foreshore and came across a member decoying duck. We were chatting away and as he had a SxS I asked what carts he was using. He produced a 3 inch Lyvale Steel cart, I passed comment that I didn't realise that he had a 3 inch magnum SxS. He looked at me in a puzzled way and said he didn't! I explained the issues of running a 3 inch cart through a 2.75 inch gun and it turned out he had already run a box through to no ill affect to man or gun! I vote for Motty!

The Yeoman is an interesting version! Looks like it should be a 3 inch mag but it's only chambered for 2.75 inch and is stamped as a Yeoman on the barrels. Don't think I have seen another like it, not sure what they thought when they put that one together!

Finished a rare night shift and went straight down the foreshore. Took the old AYA Yeoman and it didn't let me down, a greylag, a pink and a pigeon. Geese were shot with very expensive 36grm No 3 bismuth, the pigeon Eley eco wad No 3 steel 32grm. Taw (my Dog) did a good job finding the grey and pigeon in thick cover. Pigeon wraps for tea and the geese will be burgers, chilli and spag bol! Not long left now. Cheers flipper

Hi Boyd, would love an AYA No 3 mag but the only one at the local gun shop is very rough and £395! Ladds in Devon have a Berri lux but £450, local guy has a Yiliditz 3.5 wildfowler SxS but asking £600! I am just too tight! Can get the above guns on Holts unsold lots for pennies and they are coming up here in the next few weeks for a valuation day so would have no RFD transfer charges. Haven't seen many of your posts this season. I hope you and Connor have been out and about a bit and no doubt with some success? Cheers Mark

I have been looking on line at these two but can't find much info about the models. I know some of the Zabalas were quite heavy, 8 pounds plus but I don't know if that applies to this model? Any one own one or had one in the past? ZABALA HERMANOS 12-BORE (3IN.) 'MERCURY MAGNUM MODEL 6-1228' BOXLOCK NON-EJECTOR, serial no. 60076, The other one is this LAURONA 12-BORE (3IN.) Hi Boyd, that’s a good idea, may look into that further as I have a mate with the crisper already. Motty, I stand to be corrected but I thought that as long as my shot doesn’t fall on wetlands then I am legal? So in theory I can be on the foreshore and shoot inland as the shot falls onto arable fields that are not wetlands? Can anyone clarify? cheers

Hi Gerry, Yes the Yeoman is fine for standard steel, I have shot over 500 Gamebore 32grm No 4 through it and one of the barrels is full choke. It's not magnum proofed but that hasn't stopped me from firing a few 70mm High Performance shells through it or magnum lead loads!. My problem is getting hold of a 70mm steel cartridge with say no 2 or no 1 shot in for the geese. Yes I have shot them with no 4 steel but only when they are close enough, really think you need no 2 or 1 shot when on the foreshore. I was in the local gunshop today and the largest shot size they had in steel 70mm carts was eley steel no 3 32grm. I can get 36grm no 3 bismuth but that's £57 for a box of 25! RC do a 70mm 36grm no 1 cart but I can't get them here and shipping from Just Carts is extortionate as I am in the highlands. May have to home load in the end!

That pic inspired me to take my aya yeoman out, only 70mm chambers though. Shot everything with it in the past and only moved on to autos and pumps due to the steel rules. Had a great foreshore flight thur evening, 3 pinks and one grey, should have got a photo Though! one was shot with lead no 3, pointing inland when shot fired so legal in Scotland. Two fell to32 gr no 2 steel (Winchester) and the grey fell to a gamebore 32grm no4 steel which is my standard duck load. tempted to go back to it for all my wildfowling but limited choice of goose 70mm cartridges
