Hal, You do realise that a 36grm load of No1 has a higher pellet count than the 42grm BB load you are using plus it's nicer to shoot! Grahams have Gamebore 36grm no 1 and 3 in stock so you could use the No 1 to get a better pellet count. The No 1 36grm has about 129 pellets where as you 42 grm BB has about 109. Your original fav load and mine of 42grm no 1 has 154 pellets (roughly!) Figs come from here http://shotshell.drundel.com/pelletcount.htm Cheers

Hal, i use a kicks hi flyer extra full, it will fit your maxus if you still have it. If you want to pattern it against your standard chokes you can borrow it when you are up at Xmas. cheers mark

Well I seem to be back in business with the SXP. Out this evening after ducks but came home with 4 pinks and the gun cycled flawlessly! Let’s hope it continues now that I know to clean the sand out of the bolt more regularly than annually😀

Well the guns been to the gunsmiths and I may have to eat humble pie. I thought pumps were pretty much bullet proof so my cleaning regime has been minimal you could say. Usually two pulls through with the snake bore and a wipe down of the camo. Sporadically I would strip it down and remove the trigger unit and clean in there. The words of the gunsmith were along the lines that I should have had an environmental permit for taking that much sand from the beach. Apparently the bolt was pretty rammed with the stuff. So it's all been cleaned and put back together. Time will tell how we get on!

Thanks for the replies. The gun has been back to Winchester for the original recall and that was due I think to slam fires although it came back as all okay. The ammo in question was Gamebore 3 inch 36 grm no 1 steel. I have shot several boxes through it with no issues so I don't think it is an ammo issue unless I have a duff cart in there. It's a shame about this as I like the gun and shoot well with it. I had to take the auto out in the afternoon and while I shoot as well with it it pees me off that I could only find half the empties! Looks like it is off to the gunsmiths today.

As some may know I posted at the beginning of the season how I was having problems with my SXP pump but I concluded it must be me that was causing the problem. Since then all has been well until this morning, my 8th and final shot of the morning and the gun locked up solid after firing the 3rd shell. I though okay, just strip it all down and the barrel will come of and all will free up. Not a chance! Took it all apart and the bolt and fired cartridge are locked tight in the chamber. I have attached some pics. I have tried pushing a rod down the barrel to try and push the cart and bolt out but no joy. Seems I may not be the problem after all! Does any one have any ideas on how to fix this? What has happened to cause this? Cheers Mark

The grey area on CPC is if you are not driving for hire or reward. The often quoted example where you do not need CPC is you work for a scaffolding company and you drive from your depot to site and unload and spend the day erecting the scaffolding. As you are transporting your tools and equipment you do not need CPC. However if said driver delivered the scaffolding to site A then went on to deliver the rest of the load to site B then he would need CPC as he is effectively now doing deliveries and is a "delivery driver". for his company. Moving stock from one site to the other in my view would require CPC as you are acting as a delivery driver for your company and not moving the tools and equipment of your trade to site to carry out your work at site. Does the regular driver have a CPC card? If you are caught it's not only you in trouble, it will have an impact on the owners O license and his rating with DVSA and may lead to more stops in the future. I drive and have been a CPC trainer in the past so have half an idea but it is a "grey" area. The matter of payment it you or not is irrelevant, it's the act of what you are doing that counts. In reality you though the chances of you getting caught are almost zero!

I then calmed down a bit and pushed the pump slide fully forward and hey presto with the slide release button pressed in it cycled fine. So at this point I am thinking that every problem I have had is really down to user error. In particular I seem to have a problem with magnum carts as they have more recoil and with the assisted pump mechanism it has pumped itself and I haven't even noticed, hence sometimes I pump it again and end up with a live cart on the floor next to the empty. The problem for me seems more acute when taking overhead shots as opposed to crossers. Today I had 6 shots at geese without any fault or problem at all so I do think it is all down to me but after two seasons with the gun you would have thought I would have had it sussed by now.! I never have a problem with pigeon carts! Cheers

Shot a single pigeon yesterday, near Inverness. Surprised to find two acorns in its crop when there is still tons of barley to be had. Guess two acorns fill it up for less effort than a crop full of barley?

Looking for a 3 shot supernova camo as cheap as possible🙂. May be able to collect in Scotland otherwise rfd transfer.

Think it's all down to me not pumping it hard firmly enough on occasion. Just curious as to what was actually jamming in the mechanism. Mossy835, what Mossy are you getting? I have had a couple of 835's and regret parting with them as camo ones are hard to come by.

I have a Win SXP 3.5 mag that I have used for the last two seasons on the foreshore. Use it for pigeons and the odd clay or two. Great gun shoot well with it but occasionally I jam it. I have jammed it with 3 in steel shells (Gamebore and Eley) and also with Win 3.5 mags. Most times it does not jam so it is a rare occurrence and I think it is caused by me not pumping the gun, the gun has a sort of assisted pump action and unless you are good and positive with the pump it seems to be a little confused. What I don't understand is what is actually happening mechanically within the gun when it jams. Today I shot an easy pink on the seawall, a single bird dead in the air so no desperate need to pump for a second shot. When I did go to pump it it seemed jammed up. The bolt had come back a small amount, say 0.5cm, but it was all locked solid even if I used the slide release button. I ended up removing the barrel to get the empty cart out of the barrel, it dropped out by itself once I pulled the barrel clear of the rest of the gun. The second cart was still fully retained in the mag tube. Does anyone who is familiar with these guns know what is actually happening or jamming internally? Cheers

Having moved within Inverness to a house at the top of a steep hill I had a problem when the beast from the east came along! Ordinary tyres useless so at 1900 only way to get home was to go to Halfords to buy snow socks. Great grip and up the hill no problem snow or ice. Bit of a fiddle to get on but way easier then chains, say 60 secs per tyre, only needed front tyres done as front wheel drive. Missus got all weather tyres on her front set. Her all weathers worked great in snow and ice, never failed to get up the hill so when my ordinary tyres needed replaced I got A set of all weathers as well. Got to say great in snow and ice and I think better in wet conditions as well. Can’t remember what make mine are but only downside I have is they seem more sensitive to white lines as if the line on the road is raised up more. Recommend all weathers especially in north of Scotland

You only get the card a week or so after the 5th day is completed and uploaded to the Dvla, it’s the dvla who issue the card

Had the same issue with a nissan almaera tino. Never got it fixed. Bought another one and after 2 years thought better of it and got it fixed under recall, car is 13 yrs old but all done under the recall. Seems quite common?

Hi there, are these weighted with lead or something similar or is it just wood? also can you give me an idea of their length? looking for something as have been priest less since I lost a treasured stag horn priest that was lead filled and great for knocking the geese on the head as well as the fish. cheers flipper

Not sure what caused the issue but stripped everything and gave the bore a good scrub with the bronze jag thingy in the gun cleaning kit. Normally just run a bore snake through it twice after every outing and that’s all it gets as it’s a pump!

Not very often I post on here but regularly read everyone elses post so about time I put something back I was greeted by a nice thick fog this morning so off to a spot that shoots well for the geese under such rare conditions. I was also keen to see how the SXP pump fared after my last outing when it locked solid, (see my thread in the Guns and Equipment section). Settled in behind the seawall and could hear the geese close by and far off on the mud and when the fog lifted a little I could see 100 or so about 150 yards out, the rest where still hidden by the fog that then dropped back down again. 20 mins latter a bunch of pinks lift from the mud to circle back into the bay and crossed the seawall in their arc back to the mud offering a nice easy chance. As is the way with an easy chance I missed fist bird, missed second one, but thankfully dropped he 3rd one. What an amateur! Years since I have had to fire 3 shots at anything. Things settled down and some 15 mins later the birds start to flight. I can hear them coming but can't see them, closer and closer the sound of flighting geese gets until finally there they are 25yrds up and looming out of the fog right on my line. A nice left and right and before I have time to pick the two birds I can hear the next lot coming. Tuck down into the cover again and it's a repeat performance with another left and right. 5 geese down which is plenty enough for me so sleeved the gun even though there were plenty of geese still to come off the mud, back at the car by 0815! As for the pump, performed flawlessly with the shells from the same box as the other day when it all locked up which is good as I do like it!

It was fairly clean but the outing two days before had been out on the mud so harsh conditions. On looking at the chamber it had a few dirty patches so gave it a run through with a (bronze?) jag so will see how it goes from there. Was going over to Gamebores soon anyway once the Lighting No 1's are finished Cheers for the replies
