  1. Manish, Motty offers sound advice. Be sensible and get out there. I have never shot in England but started wild fowling up here without a dog for the first season. Got a dog and it is much more fun! Having said that, probably 70% of what the dog retrieves I could quite easily pick myself!
  2. I can RFD you an AYA No 3 3inch mag Used condition but barrels no pits and action tight but blueing faded. Only issue is that both barrels have a slight ring bulge, not visible to the eye but I can feel it when I run my fingers along the barrels. I have used it this season on the foreshore, got great results on the geese with Gamebore 3 inch steel No 1s Bonus is that it has sling attachments already so a sling can be used if required. Price £100 including transfer. Ley me know if you are interested
  3. As I am laid up this week with a duff back I have been surfing Youtube rather too much and came across the Dave Carrie videos. Personally I like them and the music, it shows a part of the shooting world that I would otherwise not see. I also like how Dave is trying his best to promote shooting. Going off topic re the original post, two things strike me about the videos. One, the standard team of guns is nearly always male and over 55 years old, not many young guns there but I guess that comes down to the huge cost of such days. I do wonder where the money comes from for days that can run to £4k, but if you have it why not spend it! Secondly, there is always a strong emphasis on tradition on the day with the attire and so on. But then you look at Daves guns, heavily customised trap style stocks etc etc, purpose built high pheasant guns which are a million miles away from the traditional side by side that would seem more fitting. It doesn't bother me what they shoot and good on him for pushing the boundaries with his guns but would a semi auto not be the logical conclusion of the quest for a high pheasant gun? I shall be watching a few more this week no doubt as it's the closest I am going to get to going out!
  4. Had this one at the bird feeder today. Never seen one with a white cap before, any one know what strain it may be?
  5. If anyone is looking for a 12 gauge BPS last time I looked Macleods at Tain had a black synthetic one still for sale.
  6. I gunman, not sure if anything is broken but as it’s working I will leave alone!
  7. Took the pliers to it this morning and a little tweak seems to have levelled it out. I can now insert and withdraw a fired cartridge with ease from both barrels. Yet to fire a shot for a full test but all looks good. Thanks to everyone for their help. cheers Mark
  8. Yes when fully seated it looks fine, just off line at full extraction. Will give the pliers a go tomorrow. cheers
  9. I started a new thread as the old one was way down the list. The original problem was fired cartridges in the right barrel where incredibly hard to pull out. Okay an update on the problem! i had a much closer look today after scrubbing the chamber yet again. It appears that the problem is caused by the extractor. With the barrels off the gun and the extractor duly seated flush with the chambers a fired cartridge will fit comfortably in both barrels and is easy to pull out. Assemble the gun and try to insert the same cartridge into the right barrel and it is very tight, but at this point the extractor is fully extended so it appears the problem is with the extractor, I guess it is slightly bent some where??? Whats the fix, a new extractor? If so is this a home job, I can only see one screw that may hold it in place? cheers flipper Again looking further it appears the extractor when fully out is slightly twisted. Looking at the photo you will see the top left corner is lower then the top right corner. Can I knock this back into shape? I guess a previous owner knocked it out of shape somehow? Quote

  12. I was using Winchester Drylocks 42grm No 1 for the geese for a couple of years then went down to Gamebore mammoths 36grm No 1. Duck, 32grm Gamebore No 4. The 42grm No 1 through the Kicks Extra full was great pattern and would shoot them as far as you wanted.
  13. I have a SXP that has been pretty heavily used on the foreshore. Great fowling and pigeon gun, as above the pump moves back by itself and this took me a little time to get used to and would catch me out with 3.5 inch shells as the recoil was enough for it to pump itself with out me realising, I would then pump it and find a live shell at my feet and think their was fault with the gun! It works well with the Kicks hi flyer extra full. The only time I had a problem with mine was when it locked up completely as I tried to pump it to eject a fired shell. Couldn't get it to budge for anything, luckily it was the last shot of the flight. Took the barrel off and tried ramming the cartridge and extractor out of the breech with a rod from the muzzle end but no joy. Took it to the local gun shop and they had it sorted..........he asked why there was half the beach in the bolt! The bolt is a rotating bolt (like the bennelli?) and my cleaning regime had neglected ever stripping and cleaning the bolt and after a few seasons of mud and sand it was totally clogged and would not rotate so jammed up. Never had a problem since. I would recommend getting one if you think you want to try a pump.
  14. Hi Al, another great vid. The quality of the old vids was good but I think there is a notable improvement in quality with the new camera. Shame about the greylag not making the scene! Cheers
  15. Hi Iain, that’s great information, thank you very much. I know most of the places you mention as I come up every year for a family holiday and some trout fishing. with regards to the fore shore, the way I read your post I still need the land owners permission but from what you say most farmers are fairly obliging about permission on the sea shore? cheers
  16. Another great vid. So what was the outcome of the double gunning, any preference? i noticed you had rather a good bag/rucksack, what make is it and how many decoys can you get in it? cheers flipper

    Orkney

I hope to be in Orkney in January and was going to take the gun and dog along. I know that there is no free fore shore shooting (?) as in the rest of Scotland but is there anyway to get some fore shore shooting. i am a Wildfowler and shoot plenty of geese on the firths around Inverness so I am not really interested in goose guides and decoying. A few mornings or evenings on the shore after duck would be good though. Anyone any suggestions? cheers
  18. Al, great videos as usual. Re the gun, I thought you had a semi auto last season and looked at a pump for this year? cheers
  19. Wife had one for a year, two litre (?) petrol model. Bought from her friend at 7 years old, 62 plate. Full service history and known owner 50k on clock so we thought great buy. One year on just sold it following a 2k engine repair bill for a stretched cam chain at 52k. Bloody shameful. Google tt cam chain issues, known problem with a poorly designed tensioner. 2 class actions in the states against Audi. but a good looking car and fun and fast!
  20. Hi Enfield spares. if you are correct (and you know a lot more than me on the matter!) surely if the cartridge is bulging then when I put that fired cartridge into the left barrel it should also be hard to extract from there as well? As it stands I can put the fired cartridge into the left barrel and it can be pulled out just fine. cheers
  21. Today after bagging two pinks I did some testing with the used carts. Any cart is fine in the left barrel. I took a used cart that had been fired from the left barrel. I placed it into the right barrel and had the same problem in that it is hard to extract. I slowly inserted the fired cart into the right barrel and it was free to move up and down and rotate until the point that the brass came into contact with the chamber. These were hi brass carts and the first little bit was tight but not too bad, push the cart fully home and you could feel it getting tighter and it then became a tug of war to remove the cart. I think this suggests that the first 5mm or so of the chamber needs polished or reamed to give a fraction more space? Wire wool has been suggested, what about wet and dry paper wrapped around a bore mop or similar? Cheers
  22. Carts are all correct length for the gun,it’s a 3 inch mag. enfieldspares, next time I get a chance I will fire some shots off and test the cases as you suggest. will update you after that. Cheers
