Anyone feel the cold during Winter?
bruno22rf replied to bruno22rf's topic in General Shooting Matters
When you get older and suffer poor circulation, or with some diseases or medication, your body simply cannot handle the cold - I have shot in weather when I was younger that physically made my mate cry with cold. With many more years behind me, and a medical history that I will not bore you with, I now shiver around 5 degrees - merino wool, padded shirts, Army extreme weather boiler suits - tried em all but to no avail hence the new experiment with heated clothing. So far it seems to be the best by a mile - it's no thicker than a wool shirt but is very warm even on it's lowest setting. Spoke to a local seamstress today re jacket being too small - she informs me that she can make an insert - zipped both sides to attach to the jackets zip, for a couple of quid - result. -
Great - surely thousands must die in the UK now that farmers have decided that Autumn is a great time to cut hedges back - along with the fruit and berries that they hold.

Baikal o/u......not seen this before.

Someone has put this together, in my opinion, the case and extra forend have been added to the fairly common twin barrel set - nice enough though, nowt wrong with Baikal's. -
Mice - she was launching Superdomes rather impressively but they took some persuading into the breach - Air Fective noticed that the indent that locates the barrel was damaged and could be allowing te barrel to move under force - they replaced it in seconds but I am reluctant to use SD's again just in case. She's back on a diet of FTT at the moment and seems a very happy Cat indeed but I'm pretty sure that over penetration is going to be worse now that she is spitting them out so close to the limit - it's a case of hearing the pellet strike the second that you feel the sear trip. Was getting acceptable groups with the Hunter Extremes but the new Hades look promising when the smaller calibre is available. Used to love thread cutting - so easy on a CNC ( G76?) and found taper threads ( R- ?) the most interesting - annoying sometimes to think that all your precision work is then fitted by a 20 stone monkey using a heavy pipe wrench.

I feel exactly the same way the last few years shooting alone - it's getting to a point where I prefer to take someone out on my perm and just watch the action.
-
Dunhill is very classy but I love jean paul gaultier - one in the body shaped bottle. Until about 10 years ago I worked in a scrap yard - so many cars had aftershave in the glove box that I never had to buy any till about 2 years back.

old'un - they run the same as most mobile phones - 5v - you can charge the power banks using your phone charger USB adaptor - the power bank comes with a lead with the male USB on the end - mine is identical to ebay item 133181308298 but got mine slightly cheaper on Amazon. If it's any help re sizing I am 46" chest , 47@ round the ,er, fat bit and 93kg - the xxxxl is tight. -
TBH Mice - once Stu and I have decided exactly what colour Tank Tops to wear together I was going to offer you the chance to be just like us - you've gone and blown it now - so the Tank Top Twins it shall remain.......your loss, I only hope you come to realise how close you became to being a fashion Icon.

Absolutely shameless advert for these guys - I have no connection with them (wish I did) but after watching Liam strip and repair my Wildcat before my very own eyes I am literally gobsmacked at the level of workmanship and attention to detail given to parts of my rifle that I didn't even know existed. Hands up I had made my FX Wildcat poorly with fiddling but Liam simply dismantled/rebuilt her without even a break in conversation and returned her to me with many new parts and smoother than before including an energy level print out to dream of - all for a price that I am too embarrassed to admit incase they have made a mistake and come chasing me for the extra. If you have a PCP, or indeed any type of Air Rifle, that needs attention then do yourselves a huge favour and take it to these guys cos if we ever lose them, for whatever reason, it's going to be a massive loss to the Airgun community.

No smell or mess from the heated jackets - 3 settings and I reckon the highest would make toast. Instructions are awful - standard Chines translation that could equate to anything from changing the batteries in your LED Santa to adjusting the headlights on a 1995 Nissan Sunny. -

johnphilip - yup - 12 different meds/day - cold most likely due to poor circulation and heart failure + my blood is kept "thin" to ensure good supply to organ transplants. As pointed out, these do not come with a power bank - mine, as said, is a 25800mAh and seems to be a bit of over kill - kept jacket at 25 degrees for 5 ish hours then recharged my iphone 5 days running before dropping 25% charge. Jackets come with an inside pocket that also has the male USB connector and about 6 inches of lead - batteries weigh about 300 grams and have the added bonus of being able to charge your mobile if you get the right lead (you most likely already have one) while still keeping you warm. -

I do , ditchman, every 3 months. -
As a self confessed Captain Frosty I feel the cold something terrible during the Winter months - anything below around 6-7 degrees and I'm a shivering wreck. So I have been trawling the interweb for a possible answer and have come up with cheap heated jackets from the land of the Takeaway. The princely sum of £18 on the bay of plenty gets you a gillet style jacket that takes about 3 weeks to arrive - however your first obstacle is the Chinese idea of sizing - I;m an xxl but their xxxxl is too small but I can just squeeze into it. Next you need a power bank - I paid £16 on Amazon for a 28500maH unit that came next day via prime. So what's the deal? Well, so far, I have only had one opportunity to try it (about a week ago when it was 5 degrees early in the morning) - I have to say that, first impressions, it is pretty darn good - the battery takes 10 hours to charge ( lead comes with the battery and charges via a USB socket) but the jacket will then stay warm for at least 5 hours at it's lower setting (lower setting feels like having the sun on your back) and probably far longer, in fact, after 5 hours the battery was not showing any drop in charge and I'm fairly confident that 12 hours would be easily attainable. On it's highest setting the jacket runs at 36 degrees which is too warm for even me at the moment but as it gets colder outside who knows?

I charge my 410 to 170 - gives around 40 shots with no drop whatsoever down to 100 bar ish.

You - taking the pith? -
Bit off track but , in my near 60 years on this earth, I have never seen a Merlin - anybody see them regularly?Just wondered?
-
Well worth the money - not seen many that are not SK/SK.
-
Fairly typical Brum Gunmaker - but I think he made barrels for the trade - seem to recall some well known London makers used his Damascus barrels and he was quite a driving force in the introduction of chokes.

Thanks Stu - that's interesting. The patch I pulled thru was dark grey so fairly well leaded - less than a month since it was last cleaned and about 200 shots later. The Hobby have made me realise that the Supermags are never going to load easily so that's a tenner down the pan - going to sit in a corner and be grumpy for a few days now while I decide what to do next, Squirrel season, for me, is almost upon us so time is not on my side but ,at least, I still have the .22 S410.
-
Right then - what a tale of Woe. The Hobby are an absolute sod to load - had to tap the cocking lever with the palm of my hand to get some of them in the breach - they then patterned like a .410 over my 27 yard range. Next I tried Superdomes - these again seemed 8 of the most unsociable pellets ever as they refused to stay in a group - good old JSB went the same way so I gave up, well.almost. To try and regain some sanity I filled the mag with it's normal FTT and sent 8 downrange - worst group ever from these, normally exemplary, rounds. I can only surmise that I have moved something or filled the breach with clippings so I spent an hour removing the barrel and cleaning everything thoroughly - back to normal now but strangely now getting superb groups with Superdomes as well?
-
Using Field Target Trophy (Remington thunder) at the moment because they turned out to be most accurate in the Cat - ordered some Supermags from evilbay to try but still have some Hunter Extremes from previous .177 - bit anxious about feeding a flathead so I'm off to the garden now to give some old Hobby a trial.
-
Contracts work both ways - if they failed to deliver a vital requirement then they have broken the contract.
-
Thanks for the replies so far - when I had this problem before I did, indeed, switch to Hunter Extremes and they worked much better but even using them I witnessed the odd Squizzer still alive after being head shot ( I ended last years shooting by only using my .22) although I had noted that longer range victims seemed to drop stone dead. I'm thinking this is simply a case of the pellet not delivering much shock at shorter ranges ( vast majority are 20 yards max) so a flat head, heavier pellet, like the Supermag might do the job as long as they are accurate in my Cat.

Here we go.....I refuse to photograph an animal in distress, my duty is to dispatch it asap therefore you need to take my word for it. It was NOT shot thru the Jaw/Ear/ Nose but cleanly just behind the eye and it was alert to me approaching it ( this is not the first time I have posted on this situation) and , on being prodded with the barrel, attempted to bury itself under brush. It was not jumping about and even my wife witnessed it crawling away after dropping post impact. I have no desire to start a debate on this being believable because it's happened more than once - I simply ask for opinions on the Supermags. Thank you aga man - but the Supermags?
