  3. When my cousin is out with his pump and we are waiting for a flight or he is out picking up birds he has it loaded but with the slide back half way so the shell is half way in so all he has to do when he lifts the gun to shoot is slide the slide forward a bit and shoot. It works for him.
  4. My wife easily handles my SX3 with 28 gram cartridges, it's a light gun with low recoil.
  5. My local gun dealer had one of these in not long ago and if I had had the money I would have bought it. Lovely little gun http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Remington_Shotgun_870_For-Sale_140109164448001

  9. Excellent, well done anser, as you say a grand end.
  10. I wondered about the lapua 155gr mega in the 6.5 for them piggies, just a thought.
  11. Another vote for the deerhunter range
  12. I bought the lee challenger kit which has just about all you need. After I was up and running I started to add bits and pieces to make thing easier and faster. Have a look at this link and you will see what the kit has and it also has a list of what you will need that is not included. http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/414b151ff382eb1175681929/Lee+Breech+Lock+Challenger+Reloading+Kit+/
  13. It is a very exciting form of shooting and can be very fast and frantic so you have to keep a cool head. When the rabbit bolts, take your time and make sure the shot is safe before pulling the trigger, you will have more time than you think.
  14. I went for the .223 because it uses less powder, less recoil, easier to moderate, cheaper to run and all things equal should have a longer barrel life and looking at this table the MPB range is only 14 yards less than the 250 for the 55gr soft point. I know this is just one load and different loads can vary a lot but for me I couldn't see the point in burning twice the powder for all it gained. This is just my opinion and my reasons for choosing the 223, I am sure there will be others that disagree. http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htm
  15. Game bag and a cartridge belt plus a spare box in the bag if I think I will need it.
  16. My .223 has a fair bit of pitting in the barrel but is still very accurate but saying that if it was for sale I would leave it on the shelf unless I was looking for an action to re barrel.
  17. Crackin video once again, some cracking shots and the dog is a pleasure to watch, well done.
  18. Just a thought, if you are booked to go in April stick with the 223 if you are used to the gun and can shoot it with confidence because confidence in your gun, ammo etc is IMO very important. Go for the 243 for future trips but stick with the 223 for the April one. Again it's just a thought, others might disagree.
  19. Thanks for all the comments guys, I certainly had a good morning. It is plastic cases stalker 58, I am sure he said it was cases he got from myers.
  20. Thanks for that subaru, I will try ringing that last place you mentioned. Cheers.
  21. On Tuesday night I went up to Robbies and gave him a hand to load up some 4 bore shells for me to use this morning. We thought for a change we would use black powder and take his Holland and Holland single 4 since she is only proofed for black powder. The load was 4 oz of AAA lead and the powder was just bulk for bulk in a 4" hull. This morning we sat in up the side of a hill among some war time bunkers half way between where the bulk of the geese are roosting at the moment and where they are feeding and waited. A few small flocks came off the loch quite early but they passed too far out, at a good height though. I was beginning to think it was not going to work for us when about 8 geese appeared in the sky heading right towards me, I waited till they were just out in front, I pulled back the huge hammer to full cock, swung up in front of the leading bird and missed ha ha. After the sparks and flame the huge cloud of heavy white smoke blew eastwards with the wind and I couldn't help but smile. After some more birds went wide of me I moved to the next bunker along and didn't have to wait long till a dozen geese came over, again I pulled back the big hammer and swung up on the nearest bird and to my delight he tumbled out of the sky and seemed to take a while to come to earth. I had 3 more shots after that but I failed to connect, I don't think I was giving them enough lead with the slow black powder shells. Robbie had a few shots with his Tolley double 8 but he was having one of those days. I was beginning to think about packing up when I heard geese heading my way, about 20-25 geese heading towards me quite low. I kept my head down and waited, hoping they would stay on track which they did. When I stood up to shoot they were only 30 yards up but about 60 yards out to the side, I shouldered the big gun and swung up on the lead bird and fired. To my amazement I connected and the lead bird crumpled along with two that were following close behind, 3 very dead greylags laying belly up for max to retrieve, I was delighted. A very successful flight (for me at least) with one of Robbies big guns. The Holland and Holland single 4 was a delight to shoot with the black powder compared to his other single loaded with nitro which does tend to knock you around a bit. There was another two fowlers shooting further along that we spoke to later that were impressed with the fireworks display and commented on how far the cloud of heavy white smoke carried in the wind.
  22. I would think it would be. What little stalking I have done on roe and fallow has been done in woodland so I am hoping my next trip will be on the hill.
  23. Excelent, well done and good shot. I think my next stalking trip will have to be reds on the hill.
