thanks for the replies. dont get me wrong i am still happy with my load and wont be changing it, just surprised at the low velocity. i was also surprised at the result with the 45gr speer, i didnt think that velocity could increase and decrease as the powder load increased, i always thought that more fuel meant more zoom. i will speak to my firearms dealer and see if he can get me up some vihtv to try sometime. he does have some vectan sp10 and sp7, has anyone tried vectan? just out of interest

i found some 45gr speer bullets at the back of my cupboard the other night and decided to try some loads using varget to see if i could get a fast, flat round, (thought i would try it since i had my mates chrono). hodgdon states a starting load of 25 grain and a max load of 28c. i loaded 5 at 26grain and worked up in .5 grain increments to 28 grain, which filled the case to the top, (had to tap the case to get the powder out of the filler). hodgdon states a vel of 3071fps with 25 grain and 3477fps with 28 grain. heres the results i got- 26gr 7/8" @ 100 vel avg 1712 26.5 5/8 @ 100 vel avg 2923 27gr 13/8 @ 100 vel avg 1851 27.5 13/8 @ 100 vel avg 3094 28gr 1/12 @ 100 vel avg 2025 (no signs of preasure) i am quite bamboozled phaedra1106 rightly stated that 24gr on h4895 with a 52gr a-max seems a bit low. i had a look through my notes from july last year when i worked up the load i use all the time and i have writen down that 25gr and 25.5gr of h4895 was flattening the primers and 26gr and 26.5gr was flattening the primers and there was gasses leaking around the primer,there seemed to be quite a recoil with the gun so i backed it of to 24gr and had a 5 shot group at 3/8" and that is what i stuck with. i have loaded hundreds of this same load and it has been bang on since i think i am doing things right but since working with this chrono i am starting to wonder. is this just the joys of reloading or am i doing something wrong? now that i have bored the tits off you guys i look forward to some help/criticism/p**s taking or all of the afore mentioned :lol:

my starting load was 24gr going up to 27gr in .5gr increments. 24gr gave me the best group and as i went up the accuracy went to pot.

the most accurate load i worked up for my .223 a-bolt is, rem brass, win primer, 52gr a-max over 24gr of h4895. i tried the loads for the first time over my mates chronograph today and found that the average velocity was 2825fps! does this seem a bit low?

there is a Laurona o/u 3" ejector on gun trader for £325, no idea what condition its in, no pics. fixed choke at 1/4 and 1/2 which IMO is ideal.

couple of questions! where is the cheapest place to get 52gr .22 a-max bullets from? i usually order from midway uk but i see the price has gone up to £23 per hundred plus £8.85 postage. sportsman has them for £17 and the postage is £10 so they are a bit cheaper! if i am ordering from cliff's gunsmithing am i better to order as much as i can afford or does it not make much difference? thanks in advance, aister

the only after market chokes i have tried are teague's and i cant fault them, the two teague skeet chokes throw very good consistent patterns.

the chokes from my win sx3 and my browning ultra are invector plus and can be swapped

a couple of years ago we had about 100 greylags on the croft that were absolutely destroying the silage parks. i shot quite a few over a few mornings decoying but all it did was stopped them coming in in the morning, they would come in later on when i was at work. a couple of times i came home at lunch time and shot one with my 17hmr which lifted them but they were usualy back within the hour. one saturday i shot 3 with the rifle (before they got up) and nailed them upsidedown to posts i put in the middle of the park and they still came in and within a couple of days they were still there and eating within a few feet of their dipatched friends. the farmers here have tried all sorts of things, scarecrows, leaving old cars in the parks, gas guns, old cd's on strings, you name it, they have tried it. they all work for the first couple of days until the geese get used to it. there are no neeps grown here in the south end of shetland anymore because of the geese. the only thing that works is shooting them which sometimes results in big bags, which is fine imo as long as they are not wasted, but then again 99.999999999% of rabbits shot here in shetland is left to the birds, and thats a lot of rabbits, all good meat at the end of the day

i did the same thing with my uncles baikal side by side when i started shooting, apparently it did the same thing to him and to his brother too. thats baikal though, hits equally as hard at both ends

the sound of hundreds of wild geese and the sound of a winchester pump cycling. also the sound a very sharp wood plane makes when planing a clean piece of knot free wood.

i use a cordless drill to turn the cases for trimming and chamfering, when that is done i hold on the steel wool when its spining, it cleans the cases and cleans off the lub. hope that makes sense
